Chard
vulgaris ‘Fordhook Giant
Big, beautiful and green, this chard is the most productive and
longest lived that we know. Though technically a cool season
veggie, Fordhook Giant produces through all seasons in our
zone 8 garden (yes, right through the snow) and only slows
down when it goes to seed in its second year. Now, that going
to seed can be put off, too, if the bloom stalk is removed. Do
it early enough and the plant goes right back to producing its
tender, succulent leaves. I know stories of people who have
kept chard plants going for several years this way. But
whether you plant new or revitalize the old, chard is
delectable, rich in vitamins and minerals, a great source of
phytonutrients, and at the top of our list of garden favorites.
