Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries worldwide. When did Valentine's Day start? Where did it come from? The answers are unclear but many people think that it comes from the story of St.Valentine, a Roman priest who was killed around February 14 in the year 270 AD. Valentine's Day has become increasingly popular in Australia over the years, particularly during the late 20th century, and it continues to be observed among many Australians today. Activities that people do to show their love and appreciation for each other on Valentine's Day include picnics in the park, buying gifts of chocolates, flowers, jewellery, or other items for loved ones. A romantic meal at a restaurant, a boat cruise with a special meal, putting a notice on local radio dedicated to Valentine's Day. These things are all for couples - what can single people do? We often play handball in small stadiums, in parks or any “Perth has lots of great sports facilities” other soccer fields. Football is the world’s most popular sport and I’m a big fan. Everyone can play football for fun and to relax. At the moment it’s really hot in Perth so we get really tired when we play during the day. In Macedonia we have a special pitch which is covered by something that looks like a huge balloon so we can play in all weather. This idea would be really nice to use here because it would protect people from the sun and you could also play in the winter when it rains. She can be your neighbour's or friend's wife but she must be over 18 years old. The husband can use any way of carrying his wife. This year's winners are Ashlee Cross and Blaire Walkington. They finished with a time of one minute and six seconds. potential soldiers prove themselves in a race where they carried heavy sacks. The prize for winning the race is the wife's weight in beer. A little history about wife carry- by Perry ing: Wife Carrying started in Finland , and its popularity has spread throughout the world. It was most likely inspired by one of two historical tales. One 19th century legend has it that men stole wives from neighbouring villages. In a second tale, an outlaw named RosvoRonkainen made VIETNAMESE TRADITIONAL CAKE “BANH CHUNG” (steam cake) is eaten by Vietnamese people at the Lunar New Year as a traditional cake. “BANH CHUNG” is about the relationship between humans and nature, because its square shape represents the earth where people live and the ingredients represent the products made by people. Because of this reason, we usually put it on the altar to thank the Creator and also to remember our ancestors at New Year. Would you like to know how to make “BANH CHUNG”? Ingredients: Sticky rice Green beans Pork meat Boiled special leaves (Dong leaves) String Square frame Image:http://ediblyasian.info Issue 1, 2012 Method: Put sticky rice into the water and soak for 2 hours. Boil the green beans until they are soft. Then drain them and mash them. Cut pork meat into slices. Put the leaves into the frame. Place half the sticky rice on the leaves and then layer the green beans and pork meat on the rice. Finish with the rest of the sticky rice. Wrap and tie it with strings. Finally, take it out of the frame. Put the cake into a big pot and pour the water over them. It takes 10 to 12 hours to cook at a high temperature. During cooking, always make sure to keep the cake in the water. After the cake is cooked, take it out and wait for the cake to cool down and become harder. On the first day of New Year, we have a celebration in our family. We unwrap the cake from the leaves and cut it in 8 pieces. It tastes delicious. “BANH CHUNG” is tastier when it is eaten with pickled vegetables. In Perth, you can find “BANH CHUNG” in any Vietnamese shop. Charity bike ride in Australia What do you think about children who don't have parents? How do they celebrate Christmas? So a group of motorcyclist found out the way to make them happy. That is why a charity bike ride is held. This event is held every year on the first Saturday in December from 1975 until now. On that day more than 1000 motorcyclist start from Belmont park to Joondalup. The motorbikes are decorated by teddy bears, colourful ribbons and toys. Some motorcyclists wear Santa Clause clothes. When they come to Joondalup,a big truck will collect all the toys. After that, the council deliver the toys to the children and the presenters thank the riders on the day for their efforts and participation in making the event a success. By Thuan We’re on the web! www.pice.com.au Image: Perth Bikers' Charity Ride® Different National Holidays around the World Is Australia a suitable place for partying? Australia day shows that it is! Australia Day is celebrated on the 26th of January as the day that the European settlement of Australia began. It was on 26th January 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip sailed into Sydney Cove. Australian people really enjoy this day. Plenty of them are on the streets, on the beaches or preparing meals on public BBQ' s. By the way, the public BBQ' s are free and they are very popular and easy to use. There are some competitions during the day and fireworks in the evening. You can see Australian flags everywhere such as on clothes, faces, cups, chairs, cars, etc. A few days ago, it was possible to buy many products with Australian flags. But this isn't typical for some countries. For example in the Czech Republic and China things are very different. In The Czech Republic people celebrate their National Day on 28 th October. The reason is that the Czech Republic was established on October 28th 1918 after the First World War. The day is a public holiday but celebrations aren't big like in Australia. Some people go to some luxury restaurants for a special dinner but most people just simply enjoy a day off without any celebrations. In contrast, in China, the National Day is celebrated every year on October 1 st and it has a 7-day public holiday. Why do Chinese people celebrate this day? The reason is China was founded on October 1 st,1949 with a ceremony at Tiananmen Square. This is the symbol of China to become an independent country and from then on, Chinese people celebrate their National Day as their custom to show their pride in China and remember this breathtaking moment. The National Day is celebrated throughout mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau with a variety of governmentorganised festivities, including fireworks and concerts. Nowadays in China, young people prefer Western Festivals rather than Chinese traditional festivals and this is a common and serious phenomenon. Finally, we can say that National Day celebrations are much more popular in Australia than in Czech Republic and China. Not only Australian people but also many foreigners enjoy it. It's like a huge party for everyone. We think it's important to celebrate the National Day and hope we can follow Australia's example. It's really good to keep remembering the real meaning of a National Day, especially when it means when and how our country was founded. We should not forget it. By Martin and Walter
