Wisconsin Nursery Association’s 2013 PLANT OF THE YEAR
PAST PLANT OF THE YEAR SELECTIONS
-Lucerne Blue-eyed GrassHummingbirds, bees, and butterflies aren’t the only ones attracted to the bright blue-violet,
star-shaped, ½” wide flowers and
their yellow centers. You’ll love
this long blooming perennial as a
lovely accent along walkways
and as edging for perennial borders. Since Lucerne blue-eyed
grass is a native to Wisconsin
prairies, it looks great in rock
gardens and meadows as well.
It blooms from late May to June,
forming a fountain-like shape
when in flower. It has contrasting dark green, grass-like leaves,
is resistant to deer and other
pests, and thrives in full sun and
well-drained soil.

The Plant of the Year Program was initiated by the Wisconsin
Nursery Association to promote quality—and underused
plants to the public.
Two categories were created to consider all plants:
 Woody Ornamental Plant of the Year, including deciduous
trees, evergreens, vines, deciduous shrubs and shade trees
 Perennial of the Year, including herbaceous perennials,
subshrubs, grasses, and ferns
-Swiss Stone Pine-
Perennial: Sisyrinchium angustifolium ‘Lucerne’
Lucerne blue-eyed grass
Height: 6” to 10” Spread: 8” to 10”
Prefers rich, moist well-drained soil in full sun
Hardy to zone 4b-5a
This handsome medium-sized
evergreen tree has a narrow,
dense, and upright to oval form
and brings a gorgeous deep blue
-green to any landscape all year
long. It is a hardy plant whose
cultivars, including ‘Chalet’,
‘Compacta’, ‘Glauca’, ‘Nana’,
‘Blue Mound’, ‘Short Stuff’,
‘Twister’, ‘Tip-top’, and ‘Big
Blue’ are better than the species.
Pinus cembra is full and bushy
right to the ground and produces
a sparse amount of 2-3” cones.
It is a five-needled pine with a
white cast on the lower needle
surface. Because of its slow
growth rate and neat habit, it is
perfect as a specimen plant or in
mass plantings for sites with
limited space.
