Plants to “Fall” For Autumn Colour from Foliage and Flower Prepared by Gary Lewis October 4th, 2014 Phoenix Perennials and Specialty Plants Ltd. 3380 No. 6 Rd. | Richmond, BC | V6V 1P5 604-270-4133 | [email protected] www.phoenixperennials.com p. 1 Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’ Coral Bark Maple Aceraceae (The Maple Family) Zone 6-8 The claim to fame of this beautiful Japanese maple is its winter bark which gradually darkens with the onset of cold weather to coral red and salmon. However, ‘Sango Kaku’ has other lovely features. It offers a classic arching vase shape with leaves emerging lime green then developing canary-yellow hues in summer followed by golden yellow leaves in fall with red highlights. The best bark and leaf colouration occurs when plants are grown in full sun. It is quick to colour up in fall and slow to colour down in spring. The bark is a beautiful yellow in summer with lush, bright green foliage that turns golden yellow in fall. 'Phoenix' is a hybrid of the North American Acer pensylvanicum and the Asian A. davidii.
