E very time you pick up a baby, cuddle them, sing to them or read to them they are learning about language. By sharing this book and play activities with babies they will have the opportunity to: • Enjoy stories about their families. • Explore rhyme through books and songs. • Become aware of different colours. We hope these activities will provide you with a starting point for fun play with babies. Engaging with Language and Literacy • Point to some of the pictures as you read the story. Saying the name of the things in the pictures will help babies learn what they are called. • Follow the baby’s lead when you are reading to them. Read their favourite pages over and over again. Stop when the baby wants to stop and skip the pages they are not as interested in. • Introduce the baby to colours. • Collect objects of different colours to share with the babies. For example, let them hold a toy red apple and say “Red, red, they call me red”. Do the same with objects of other colours.
