[email protected] Kill Date: October 30, 2014 Iconic 1960’s Band Pure Prairie League Set to Play High Point Theatre on Thursday, October 30 Chart-topping band from the Classic Rock era brings its collection of country-rock hits to the Triad for one night only. High Point, North Carolina – When Pure Prairie League formed in the late 1960s, no one had a label for the band’s unique style of music. Drawing heavily from classic 1960s’ rock, the group added in a heavy dose of country and high-flying harmony, giving it a sound soon to have its own genre classification of country-rock. Pure Prairie League, along with groups like the Eagles and Marshall Tucker Band, reached mainstream radio listeners by the mid-1970s, as singles like “Amie”, "Two Lane Highway" and "Falling In And Out Of Love" climbed the Billboard charts. Reunited to treat audiences to music that sounds as good today as it did when they first performed, PPL is on tour once more, bringing their timeless music to the Triad for a single live performance on Thursday, October 30, at 7:30 pm. Named from an obscure 19th century Temperance Union mentioned in the 1939 film, Dodge City, Ohio-based Pure Prairie League (PPL) maintained itself as a successful country-rock band during the 1970s and early '80s, releasing ten albums and enjoying a number of top 40 hits — including "Amie" and "Let Me Love You Tonight" — with different configurations of the group, including country star Vince Gill who fronted the band for several years. Bassist-singer Mike Reilly, a constant member of the group since 1972, acknowledged there have been a number of personnel changes and sees that as a good thing, allowing the group to expand their style and stretch themselves creatively. PPL feels extremely gratified when “Prairie Dog” fans put their heads back, eyes closed, singing along to a favorite song as they relive their college days or a moment back when that tune was part of the song tracks to their lives. "We put on a good performance,” says Reilly. “We play the songs people want to hear. We do them really well. Vocally, the band is stronger than ever. Instrumentally, we've been playing for 50-plus years. It's like … the old men throw down." “Each season we try to feature artists whose accomplishments have played a key role in the history of American popular music,” says High Point Theatre Director David Briggs. “We are very proud to include the Pure Prairie League in our 2014-2015 lineup, a group whose sound redefined categories and reshaped the musical landscape.” Tickets are $35-$40, available through www.highpointtheatre.com or by calling the Box Office at 336-887-3001.
