Profile
USA >> WASHINGTON >> COLUMBIA VALLEY
The Abeja winery is located on an old homestead in the Blue Mountains. The original 160-acre
homestead claim was filed in 1863. In the 1980s and 90s, Greg and Vanessa Finch bought the
remaining 42 acres and dedicated 14 years to restoring it. While current Abeja owners Ken and
Ginger Harrison were scouting places in which to plant their winery dreams, they stayed at the
Mill Creek Inn at Abeja. The rest is history.
Abeja, which means “bee” in Spanish, is primarily known for their Cabernet Sauvignon. It was
Ken’s passion for Cabernet that initially got him interested in winemaking, and was the major
driving force in the Harrisons’ decision to start their winery in the Columbia Valley.
Winemaker John Abbott began his career in California, returning in 1994 to his native Pacific
Northwest to help start the Canoe Ridge Vineyard. Over the years he developed vast knowledge
of winemaking and understanding and is widely respected in the field.
Wines
CABERNET SAUVIGNON—This wine has aromas of plum, blackberry, and bing cherries, leading into a
palate that includes also nuances of cedar and spice. Pleasant minerality and continuity.
CHARDONNAY—Elegant and balanced. Pears, star fruit, kiwi, and vanilla combine with moderate
integrated oak flavors, beautiful complexity, and pleasant acidity.
MERLOT—Powerful aromas of sweet fruit and spice. Bing cherry, milk chocolate, and espresso. An
earthen, mineral character is present and, when combined with the wood tannins, brings balance
to the big structure of this wine.
