Founded in 1968, Yamaha Motor Europe N.V. (YME) is the regional
headquarters of the Yamaha Motor Company in Europe. YME is
responsible for coordinating the marketing and sales activities of
numerous Yamaha Motor products in the European marketplace.
Understanding the customers’ wishes
Desiring more information into customers’ design wishes, YME turned
to the web as an economical and efficient means of collecting comparable
consumer insight. The result was the Yamaha Design Café. The site has
links directing readers to surveys. These surveys encourage visitors to
express their opinions and thoughts on current designs.
A critical component of this online user portal is software from SPSS, an
IBM Company that specializes in statistics, data mining and predictive
analysis. IBM SPSS software has provided the technology that helps
YME optimize its new product evaluation process, while increasing the
competitiveness of its existing products.
IBM SPSS Data Collection software collects
valuable survey data
Hennes Fischer, YME’s product planning consultant, used IBM® SPSS®
Data Collection Web Interviews* – a product within the company’s IBM
SPSS Data Collection survey research technology platform – to develop
and field the Design Café surveys. IBM® SPSS® Translation Utility, along
with IBM® SPSS® Data Collection Web Interviews, coordinates the
translation of responses gathered across Europe.
Now, any rider of a Yamaha motorcycle who visits the Yamaha Design
Café online portal is helping to determine the Japanese manufacturer’s
future production. The portal helps the company tailor its new product
designs closely to customer tastes.
More customer-oriented product development
achieved
The company has achieved more customer-oriented product development
thanks to information from customer surveys on the Yamaha Motor
online portal. YME has also experienced minimal product development
failures, and has improved their ability to identify purchasing trends.
