Thomas Merton Is it safe? Obviously we all have just one body. Just as obviously this fact causes us to exercise a great deal of caution about what we do with this body. Yet if we look at a ‘typical’ human, he or she never actually seem to take serious care of themselves until they feel some form of dis-ease. ‘Dis-ease’ is the major cause of the pharmaceutical industry. ‘Dis-ease’ is the reason for the proliferation of health food stores. ‘Dis-ease’ is the reason for health magazines, health clubs, health websites and health supplements. They really all should be called ‘Disease shops’, ‘Disease magazines’ and ‘Disease clubs’, because that is the reason for their existence. But is it our fault? Of course not! It’s our own human-ness that causes us to ignore our health until ‘dis-ease’ changes the way we think. C’est La Vie! Even though we don’t care for our health the way we should, the strange thing about being a human is that we do care about what form of health care we choose; usually because we have been pre-programmed to disbelieve anything that dosn’t come from the medical fraternity. So we do need all the help we can get from voices of ‘authority’ about acid/alkaline balance. This issue will, I hope, satisfy this need with one (of many) doctor’s point of view. Theodore Baroody Dr Theodore A. Baroody, DC, ND, Ph.D., Dipl. Acu. is one of the growing number of Alkaline Pioneers. His book, Alkalize or Die is an unmistakeable challenge to our pre-existing health concepts. Dr Baroody was born in Sanford, NC, in 1950. He received his B.S. in Psychology and his Masters degree in Educational Counseling from Western Carolina University in 1974 and 1978. He received his D.C. degree from Life Chiropractic College of Marietta, Ga. in 1981. He further studied in Beirut, Lebanon and at Colombo Americano, Columbia, as well as having traveled extensively in Europe and Asia to gather information on the ‘ALKALIZE OR DIE’ N ATURAL L IVING : You are and will be what you eat “The countless names attached to illnesses does not really matter.” healing arts. Dr. Baroody later completed an N.D. from Clayton School of Naturopathy in 1991 after years of clinical research in his practice and received his Ph.D. in Nutrition from American Holistic College. He s a Certified Nutritional Consultant (C.N.C.), professional member of the American Association of Nutritional Consultants, and a diplomate in acupuncture. Presently Dr.. Baroody uses nutrition, natural healing, electronic acupuncture, herbology, kinesiology and practices chiropractic separately. Here’s a quote from Dr Baroody’s book, which we heartily recommend. It’s available from Amazon Books. “The countless names attached to illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause... too much tissue acid waste in the body! And how do you know if your system is too acid? Do you need to have blood, urine, or saliva tests? At present no tests can accurately gauge how acid you are because current diagnostic methods reveal only that acid wastes are present in body fluids (blood, lymph, urine, mucous, and saliva). Such tests never give a reliable indicator of how much acid waste is actually in the system, because the fluids are always running through the tissues attempting to remove these excess tissue acid wastes. Therefore, although it is possible to measure body fluid as being alkaline or acid, it is impossible to evaluate the state of body tissues (skin, organs, glands, muscles, ligaments, arteries and vessels) based solely on blood, urine, or saliva tests. Unfortunately, waste acids that are not eliminated when they should be, are re-absorbed from the colon into the liver and put back into general circulation. suffer its gradual effects. They then deposit in the tissues. It is these tissue residues that determine sickness or health! THE IMPACT OF ACIDOSIS ON YOUR ORGANS: Discover what tissue acid wastes are present and begin the process of alkalizing yourself, thus ridding them from the body - the result being superior health, energy and the strength to enjoy life fully. .. Think about it this way... Too much acidity in the body is like having too little oil in your car. It just grinds to a halt one lazy Sunday afternoon. There you are - stuck. The body does the same thing. It starts creaking to a stop along the byways of life and you find yourself in some kind of discomfort.” “I watch with great concern as people of all classes and lifestyles suffer from this excess. It is the bane of rich and poor, young and old alike. Meat eaters and vegetarians are not exempt. Cowboys and congressmen also Acidosis is the basic foundation of all disease. We need to understand the simple process of alkalizing our body and the important role a properly alkalized body plays in restoring and maintaining our overall health. Our glands and organs function properly in exact proportion to the amount of alkaline and acid levels in our system.” Heart: The heart is one of the most alkaline-dependent organs in the body. It is partly enervated by the vagus nerve which functions best in an alkaline environment. Correct heartbeat is altered by acid wastes. These wastes rob the blood of proper oxygenation and degeneration of the heart follows. An alkaline system creates an ideal heart function. Stomach: Digestive difficulties (belching, bloating, sensitivity at the waist, intestinal gas, regurgitation, hiccups, lack or limitation of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, colic in children) may indicate vagus nerve problems and possible hiatus hernia syndrome, which can produce acid residue throughout the system. Without proper hydrochloric acid breakdown of foods, the foods become too acidic. Liver: The liver has over three hundred functions, including processing acid toxins from the blood and producing numerous alkaline enzymes for the system and is your first line of defense against any poisons. All the nourishment obtained through the gastrointestinal tract enters the blood by way of the liver. The load on the liver is much heavier when acid waste products are constantly floating in the blood. If the liver becomes too congested with protein acid wastes, death is imminent. Pancreas: The pancreas is highly dependent on correct alkaline diet. All aspects of pancreatic function reduce excess acidity and regulate blood sugar balance. To have proper blood sugar balance, you must maintain a primarily Kidneys that are over-stressed with too much acidity create kidney stones, which are composed of waste acid cells and mineral salts that have become gummed together in a waste acid substance. BALANCE alkaline-forming diet. Small Intestines: The Peyer’s Patches, in the upper portion of the small intestines are crucial to life. They are essential for proper assimilation of food and producing lymphocytes for the lymphatic system’s wide ranging nodal network. They also produce large amounts of the enzyme “chyle”, which is a major alkalizing substance. The uninterrupted flow of chyle into the system is crucial. Too much acid waste production from acid-forming foods is a great burden on the Peyer’s Patches, which lessens the production of chyle. Kidneys: In an adult, about 1 litre of blood per minute passes through the kidneys. By executing their primary duty, the kidneys keep the blood alkaline and extract acid. Kidneys that are over-stressed with too much acidity create kidney stones, which are composed of waste acid cells and mineral salts that have become gummed together in a waste acid substance. Therefore, by reducing acid-forming products from entering the body, the chances are better that you can avoid this painful condition. Colon: The colon must be kept clean of accumulated acid wastes. Poisons collect on the colon walls and in cases of diarrhea or constipation will harden and reabsorb into the bloodstream. Good bowel action (complete elimination) must be done at least 2 times per day. Lymphatic System There are 600-700 lymph glands in the body. Lymph fluid carries nutrition to the cells and removes acid waste products. Lymph fluid flows best in an alkaline environment. When the body is overly acidic, it slows, creating one of the most chronic, long-term, life-threatening situations. Gradually, the lymph dries and begins to form very tiny to very large adhesions throughout the tissues. These adhesions can interfere not only with lymph fluid but with blood flow as well. Hindered lymph flow increases Dr Theodore Baroody ‘ALKALIZE OR DIE’ “ When the body is overly acidic, it slows, creating one of the most chronic, long-term, lifethreatening situations. ” WHY WE BECOME ACID ACID/ALKALINE IS THE MAINTENACE OF MINERAL SUPPORT FOR THE BODY. tissue acid storage. Not drinking enough purified water will also slow the lymph. Waste products from foods that are not properly digested are reabsorbed into general circulation via the lymphatic ducts of the small intestine. In addition, bowel movements that do not completely clear the body of its daily poisons are also reabsorbed.” If you read Dr Baroody’s book you’ll quickly see that he is really only talking about what all doctors treat every day. Yet his realisation of the relationship between acid/alkaline balance and long term heath is what makes his summary you just read so much more relevant. Dr Baroody is not the only health professional to identify the modern day culprit as excess acid. You’ll meet more Alkaline Pioneers as our course continues, but today let’s look at WHY we need to become alkaline. Firstly, we need to look at what we are not doing to recognise what we need to do. Things we may not be doing include regular detoxification, correctly balanced nutrition, regular exercise and stress reduction. Because acid/alkaline balance is wholistic, I believe we need to appreciate that whole health means addressing all aspects of health, including the above-mentioned. Acid/Alkaline Balance then, is maintaining a balanced mineral support for the body. Later on you’ll see a graph that indicates the ability or inability to absorb a full range of minerals due to an incorrect acid/alkaline balance. This means that we need to balance first, intake minerals second, as well as detox, eat well and exercise! Without a minerally balanced body, we are really expecting miracles if we resort to homoeopaths, acupuncturists or herbalists because the inner terrain cannot ‘work with’ these therapies. It cannot respond from a point of balance. Acid/Alkaline balance relates to our most fundamental body level. The fluid surrounding every cell of our body is described by Herman Aihara, writer of Acid and Alkaline as our inner sea. He postulates that when we left the depths, we took our own inner sea with us. Whether you agree philosophically or not, this ‘inner sea’ certainly bears a striking resemblance to sea water. It is saline, alkaline and mineralised. Why is acid/alkaline the ‘basic’ level of balance? Why? Because this fluid is so fundamentally important. It carries nutrition to the cell, waste from the cell, energy from the cell, and it is the ‘sea’ in which the tiny antennae of each cell float. These antennae are responsible for detecting friend or foe, and communicating this information to the cell itself, so the constitution of the sea in which these incredibly small antennae ‘fly’ is crucial to their function and in turn, their parent cell’s function. Further, the transmission of energy from the mitochondria, the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell, is also dependent on this inner sea being capable of carrying this electrical energy to where it is required. pH is, practically speaking at this level, an electrical function. Incorrect pH means incorrect or inadequate enegy transmission around the body! So now we have talked about the importance of the pH level of our blood and of our interstitial fluid. But how can we determine what pH we are at any point in time? Well, I wish I could give you an easy answer to that, but the more ‘experts’ I talk to, the more diverse their opinions become. One expert will say that you must have an exact value of urine pH, while another will say that there are no “normal” values for urine and saliva, because our body is a constantly changing dynamic of cleansing, recharging, rebuilding, detoxing and more functions, going on concurrently and separately, depending on how we live our life. Your urine pH will vary based on what you ate the night before. Your saliva pH reading will Young Hippocrates tests alkaline. “ Your urine pH will vary based on what you ate the night before. Your saliva pH reading will depend on what you have been eating for the last few months! ” WHY WE BECOME ACID THE PRIMARY REASON IS OVER-CONSUMPTION OF PROTEIN. depend on what you have been eating for the last few months! It will also vary depending on the time of day, how well you slept and how much stress you are experiencing! URINE AND SALIVA TESTING This simple test was in use long before modern blood tests came into existence. Today, no-oner bothers, just as no modern medico relates to homoeopathy, the precursoR of allopathy. The amount of information a pH test provides is considerable and can form the basis of your future healtth management. If your pH is not right, nothing in the body works to its possible peak. This includes all therapies; vitamins, acupuncture, herbals and allopathic drugs. No matter what is wrong with you, the healing process begins with RE-MINERALIZATION. Herein lies the problem. The only way you can replace these minerals is by consuming fruits and vegetables. Mineral supplements only work temporarily. Most minerals are ground up rocks. They can’t be incorporated into the body cells. Plants digest rocks, people don’t. A urine or saliva test advises us on how many acid or alkaline minerals are left in our bodies, i.e. what the MINERAL RESERVES of the body are, and what we must do to remineralize it. This lays the foundation for any and all healing therapies. HOW WE BECOME ACID The primary reason modern Westerners become over-acidic is from over-consumption of protein. As protein breaks down in our “Plants digest rocks, people bodies, it breaks down into strong acids; sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric. These acids are so strong they could burn holes in your clothes, and eat metal. I am not saying we don’t need protein, but I am saying we are totally over the top in what we believe is ‘enough’. To survive we need only 40 grams a day. If we eat more than 47 grams, we will actually begin to lose calcium. I hope you can hear this. It doesn’t mean we need only eat one 50g egg a day. It means we need to eat only enough food containing 47g or pure protein. Depending upon your own diet preferences this could equal far more in total grams of food consumed. BUT the ‘untold truth’ is that because excess protein turns into acids, it has to be immediately neutralised, and if we are not alkaline eaters, there is only one place to get alkaline calcium; the bones and teeth! (Even an Olympic athlete only needs 80 grams of protein a day.) Excess Eating Means Loss of Calcium The SAD (Standard American Diet) diet contains 200 grams of protein per day. Plato said it a long, long time ago, but certainly the more affluent we are as a nation, the more meat we seem to think we need to eat. This is one reason postulated for the extinction of the Mayan Indians; their skeletons are demineralized, as if they too had been soaked in excess acid. Maybe toward the end they ‘supersized’ at the local fast food joint. Of course, there are other contributing factors. Stress, for instance, is the modern acidifier. When we hear that it is unhealthy to stress, most of us believe it is the emotions that we experience that cause the ‘unhealthiness’ of stress, but that is just the start. Stress actually has a chemical reponse in the body. Acid is produced as the body resp[onds to the perceived real or imaginary threat. The adrenals squirt adrenalin into our system, and every part of our body responds with a flight or fight response. ..or at least it should. It’s my personal belief that today we have so internalised stress due to its social unacceptability that this inernalisation actually translates into additional acids in the body. Later we’ll discuss groundbreaking research that agrees with my own pet theory.
