This study guide is basically an outline of the things we’ve discussed in class
and what you read in the book. You should use this outline in conjunction
with your notes and the sample test.

Chapter 2 Section 1 – Viruses
 Characteristics of a virus includes – parasite – like features as it
attaches to a host cell.
 Virus Shapes – See one of the pictures on the website as well as a
handout that was given to you.
 Virus Sizes – check out the cellsalive.net website to remind yourself
how small they really are!
 Naming Viruses – three key ways to name a virus. Check pages 42 –
43 to help you.
 Structure of a virus – two key parts. Look at the guided reading to find
the diagram.
 2 virus cycles – hidden and active. Know the differences between the
two. Excellent essay question!
Chapter 2 Section 2 – Bacteria
 Cell Structures – Know the parts of a bacteria cell. Use the guided
reading to help you. Excellent diagram!
 Bacteria Shapes – round-like, rod like, and spiral. Remember we
talked about the science words used to describe these shapes. You also
received a hand out about shapes and their names.
 How to bacteria gather energy? Pgs 50 – 51 in your book help you
out.
 2 types of reproduction – asexual and sexual. Know the steps for each.
The guided reading packet had a chart for you to fill out. That will
help you know the differences.
 Endospore formation – survival technique to help bacteria last through
no food, water, or extreme temperatures.
 Bacteria and food – How do we use bacteria in food like yogurt?
Excellent short answer question, don’t you think?
 Know the other ways bacteria help the Earth and humans – pages 54 –
57.
Chapter 2 Section 3 – Viruses, Bacteria, and Your Health
 Know the 4 ways infectious diseases spread – pg. 61 in textbook.
 Know differences for treating bacterial diseases vs. viral diseases.
 Be able to identify ways to prevent these diseases – pg. 65 in book
