In 2010 the New York Philharmonic gave the orchestra’s 15,000th concert – a number
unmatched by any other orchestra. This unprecedented milestone concert in Avery Fisher Hall
took place with Denis Matsuev as soloist, conducted by Maestro Valery Gergiev, was praised
highly by music critics.
Anthony Tommasini, Chief Critic of The New York Times, wrote: “Denis Matsuev, the fast-rising
young Russian pianist, made his debut in [Stravinsky’s] Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra,
which usually comes across as a perky work alive with jazz energy and ornate piano writing. But
Mr. Matsuev, wielding his athletic virtuosity and steely power, gave a chiselled, hard-driving yet
transparent performance, matched in character and cool brilliance by Mr. Gergiev and the
orchestra. The ovation was enormous, so Mr. Matsuev played an encore, showing his delicate
side in a gently tinkling account of Liadov’s ‘Music Box.’ ”
Denis Matsuev has performed as soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic since 1995, and since
2004 has presented his annual “Soloist Denis Matsuev” concert with leading Russian and
foreign orchestras.

hear.”

1 and 2 and Shchedrin’s Fifth with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra in the famed

Music Magazine, which noted: “Denis Matsuev may be better-known internationally as a
Rachmaninov expert, but these new accounts of the two Shostakovich Concertos must be
among the best currently available.” Norman Lebrecht continued: “Neither is a virtuoso vehicle
and, the composer apart, there is no pianist who has stamped these works decisively as his or
her own. Denis Matsuev, a Siberian who made his name in Rachmaninov is perhaps the first to
come close.”
In 2011, the anniversary year of Franz Liszt, RCA Red Seal released the Matsuev Liszt album,
