Last Revision: Fall 2014-2015 SYLLABUS BUS 146 3 Semester Credit Hours - C I. Personal Finance 3 Contact Hours Course Description This course is a survey of topics of interest to the consumer. Topics include budgeting, financial institutions, basic income tax, credit, consumer protection, insurance, house purchase, retirement planning, estate planning, investing, and consumer purchases. II. Course Textbook, Manuals, or Other Required Materials Garman, E. Thomas, Personal Finance, 9th Edition, Cengage Learning, Incorporated, 2008. III. Prerequisite None IV. Course Learning Outcomes A. B. C. D. E. V. The student will demonstrate mastery of basic terminology and concepts in money management, income taxes, consumer credit, and investments. The student will develop and utilize strategies for financial planning in the areas of income taxes, retirement saving, and investments. The student will utilize financial research tools for assessing the performance of personal investments. The student will demonstrate the ability to evaluate and purchase consumer credit and personal investments. The student will demonstrate the ability to maintain checking, saving, and credit accounts. Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason or circumstance, should with draw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the student’s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. IX.
