NOUNS REVIEW NOTES
1. Cases of nouns:
NOMINATIVE – Subject, direct address, predicate noun, and some appositives
OBJECTIVE – Direct object, indirect object, object of the preposition and some appositives
POSSESSIVE – Noun with an apostrophe and s, to show ownership
2. Functions of nouns that we have learned so far:
SUBJECT – the do-er
PREDICATE NOUN – the noun following a linking verb (equated to the subject)
DIRECT ADDRESS – the noun naming a person being spoken to
APPOSITIVE – a noun restating a noun just previous to it
DIRECT OBJECT – answers “what?” after an action verb
INDIRECT OBJECT – answers “to whom?” or “for whom?” after an action verb
OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION – the noun in a prepositional phrase
3. Forms of the verb “to be”. These are linking verbs.

4. Know these facts:
A clause must have a subject and a verb.
A subject or verb will never be in a prepositional phrase.
A direct or indirect object will never be in a prepositional phrase.
An action verb takes a direct object and/or an indirect object.
A linking verb takes a predicate noun.
An appositive is the same case as the noun that it restates.
5. Study the prepositions to help in identifying objects of prepositions.
