A generator will definitely help avoid any loss or inconvenience resulting from an extensive power outage. However, unless safely installed, a generator can cause serious injury or death to power line workers or to your family due to back-feeding. Improper installation also risks damage to the generator when electrical service is restored. When you use electricity from the City of Altamont’s service lines, the transformer at your location steps the voltage down from 7,200 volts to the 120/240 volts used in your home. For small portable generators that serve a single freezer or other appliance that plugs directly into the generator, a transfer switch is NOT necessary. But, any time a generator serves loads through the permanent house wiring system of the home or business, a suitable transfer switch MUST be installed. When you run a generator through the permanent wiring of your home or business without a double-throw switch installed on your system, you may feed 120 volt current back into the transformer. The transformer then steps the voltage up from the 120 volts back to the 7,200 volts, potentially giving a lethal shock to anyone who contacts a damaged power line that may be lying on the ground. Think of a sudden energized down power line and the person repairing it. Please consider the safety of your neighbors and their children, and have your generator installed properly, preferably by a licensed electrician. Never run a generator in a basement or other enclosed area. Fumes that are not easily detected can be lethal to the occupants. Please install a carbon monoxide detector!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The City of Altamont will be glad to visit with you about your generator plans, doublethrow transfer switch, and any questions you may have, at no cost to the customer. Should assistance with installation of an alternate power/generator supply be given to you; the City will need to bill you for those hours. I HAVE READ THE APPLICATION AND ORDINANCE. I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND, AND AGREE TO ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF INSTALLING AN ALTERNATE POWER/GENERATOR SUPPLY. SIGNED:___________________________________________ DATE______________
