Utopian Project
Objective: Your group will create a Utopian society. It is necessary for your group to
implement this society. You will present your society to the rest of your classmates. How do
you plan to present your society so others will welcome your ideas? (Power Point, props, etc.)
Everyone in your group must participate in creating and presenting some part of the society. It
is up to your group to decide who will be responsible for which parts of the project, but the
entire group is responsible for the entire project. Recommendation: Pick one person to be in
charge of one flash drive that contains the entire project. This will help to ensure that all parts
of the project are accessible when the project is due.
The following needs to be included in the presentation:
1. Name of your Utopian society/Declaration of Intent. Choose a name that is creative and
appropriate to represent your society. Write a persuasive document (5 paragraphs –
thesis and evidence) describing the reasons that you formed your Utopian society. In
other words, why is your society different from the world we live in now? Why do we
need your more “perfect” society? Needs to be Microsoft Word document to present on
Smart Board. Edit accordingly.

2. Type of Government. We live in a democracy, but your society could be run differently.
Is your society a monarchy, democracy, dictatorship or oligarchy? Research these
governments and decide what type of government you will choose and explain why.
Then design a flow chart explaining who is in charge of what government job (at least
five government titles depicted - USE EUPHEMISMS). Be creative with job titles as this is
your creation and not what our government has in place now. This needs to be shown
to viewers through flow chart presentation.

3. List of Rules. Every society requires some type of rules to run smoothly. Develop a list of
ten rules that all your citizens must follow. This will be informative writing. Think
about the rules that you would want to follow in your perfect world. Explanation of
rules required. These rules need to be shown to the viewers (Power Point, Poster, etc).

4. List of Citizen Jobs. Societies also require that people hold certain jobs to make the
society run. In The Giver, they have Nurturers, The Giver, Food Delivers and the Elders.
Create and present FIVE important jobs in your society and describe what they do in
their jobs and what type of people you would like to see hold those jobs. USE
EUPHEMISMS! Each description should be at least FIVE sentences long. How will you
present these jobs to the viewers? (Microsoft Word document, Power Point presentation,
poster, etc.)
20 points/__________
5. Daily Schedule. Societies like the Giver’s society require structure in order to operate
smoothly. Describe a typical day for a child and a working adult. Explain each routine
thoroughly. Each day should have at least 10 different activities broken up by the hour.
How will you demonstrate this to the viewers? (Microsoft Word document, Power Point
presentation, poster, pamphlet, etc.)
10 points/__________
6. Invitation to Join – Persuasive Advertisement/Visual. Create and present the ad/visual
your group will plan to show the class. This ad/visual should persuade (propaganda)
viewers to join your society. Ideas should include showing pictures of people
participating in your society, a visual of the actual society and an advertisement
depicting the society.

Group Work
Each member of each group is ultimately responsible for the entire project, and each
member in the group will receive the same grade. However, it will be beneficial to
“divide and conquer” by making each member of the group responsible for overseeing the
completion of one aspect of the project. You will all still need to work together to make
sure that the project gets completed and that your group is ready to present when it is
time.
