Week 1 word study focuses on homonyms.
o Homonyms are words that sound the same but have different meanings and
spellings.
o Find a homonym for the words listed, and write the definitions. Come up with
more!!

Week 2 word study focuses on focuses on verbs.
o A verb is the action of a sentence
o Create sentences and underline the verb. The first one has been done for you!

o In a story, an author writes about fictional, or make-believe, characters, settings,
and events. Often times, a character is trying to solve a problem.
o List some ideas of stories you could write.

o Stories have a beginning, middle, and end. In An Important Debate, the
beginning is when Speaker Stevens’ dialogue sets up the problem/conflict.
Congressman Rock’s dialogue and Congresswoman Green’s dialogue make up
the middle of the play and provide the climax. Speaker Stevens’ final dialogue
represents the end and the resolution to the problem.
o Pick a story and identify the beginning (and problem), middle (and climax), and
end (and resolution).

o The setting is the where and when of a poem, play, or story. In a play, the
setting can also refer to the scenery or stage props.
o Describe the setting of some books you’ve recently read or selections from this
theme.

o As you read, take time to monitor your understanding. Every so often, stop and
make sure you understand what you have read thus far. If you realize you do
not understand something, take action!

o As you read, take time to synthesize information. Synthesizing involves more
than simply summarizing the big ideas in what you are reading. When you
synthesize, you combine ideas to create new ideas that increase your
understanding.

o An action verb shows what the subject in a sentence does.
o A linking verb does not show action.
