Women Imprisoned Group #2, Angel, Bria, Mike, Shakira, Yashaira Female Institutions • Are strictly Penal ( steel bars, concrete floors ext.) • Majority are none secure and similar to college dormitories and group homes. • Woman suffer from lack of adequate training • Lack of health and treatment • Lack of educational facilities. • Little effort made to help with developing better parenting skills. • Job-training opportunities are also a problem. Exhibit 12.1 Female Inmates • Unlike male inmates female inmates are younger (most are under 30) • Minority group members • Unmarried • Undereducated • Underemployed / Unemployed • Poor, unskilled woman of color who have small children • Have health problems • History of abuse • Incarcerated for low-level drug or property offenses. Female Inmates #2 • Women report of having substance abuse problems • Three-fourth of women have used drug at some time in their lives. • Because of prior history of drug abuse there is a higher risk of exposure to HIV • Reports or trading sex for money or drugs (weekly of more often) Sexual Violence in Women’s Prisons • Female prisoners being sexually abused and exploited by male correctional workers • Use of brute force, coercion to gain sexual control • Lewd remarks , voyeurism, Assault and rape • Perpetrator rarely go to trial • Workers cover for each other • Few of the women act with what is called “Adolescent behavior” Adapting to Female Institution • Forced to undergo a prison socialization fraught with danger and volatile situations • Female inmates are more likely to mutilate their own bodies and to attempt suicide • Make-believe family ( substitute family group – faux father, Mother, and siblings) • Inmates may play multiple roles
