Position Summary:
The Optometrist provides primary vision care examinations for the purpose of prescribing eyeglasses,
fitting contact lenses, diagnosing, treating and managing disorders of the visual system, eye diseases,
injuries and ocular and/or systematic conditions. The Optometrist provides complete high quality
optometric/vision care services to underserved patients and populations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs vision tests and analyzes results.
2. Diagnoses sight problems such as nearsightedness or farsightedness and eye diseases such as
glaucoma.
3. Prescribes eyeglasses, contact lenses, and medications as necessary.
4. Provides treatment of the visual system within the scope of optometric licensure, including
writing prescriptions for ophthalmic spectacles, contact lenses, orthoptics and non-optical aids.
5. Provides treatments such as vision therapy or low-vision rehabilitation.
6. Provides additional specialized testing and therapy such as contact lens examinations, visual
fields (perimetry), tonometry, orthoptics (for therapy of amblyopia, suppression, diplopia,
extraocular muscle problems, and associated conditions), low vision evaluation (for the diagnosis
and treatment of patients with subnormal vision not correctable with standard opthalmic
appliances), fluorescein angiography (for diagnosing and documenting ocular conditions) and
ocular photography (for photo examination of the external and internal structures of the eye).
7. Provides pre- and postoperative care to patients undergoing eye surgery such as post-surgery
examinations.
8. Evaluates patients for the presence of diseases such as diabetes and refers patients to other
healthcare providers as needed.
9. Promotes eye health; counsels patients and provides training on the proper cleaning of contact
lenses and how to wear them.
10. Maintains compliance with all current organizational, state and federal regulations pertaining to
Optometry.
11. With the support of the Safety Officer, responsible for ensuring the physical site is safe
according to regulatory requirements (e.g. Cal OSHA); identifying and coordinating the
correction of hazards; and training department staff on required elements.
12. Monitors staff compliance with universal precautions, and ensures staff is aware of and updated
on changes. Documents all training and incidents for investigation.
13. Functions as the departmental lead for fire drills and mock code exercises.

14. Documents in a E.H.R. physical findings, formulates plan/prognosis based on patient's condition
and follow-up with patient in an accurate, timely way.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree is required.
2. Must be certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.
3. Must possess current California state required licensures.
4. Familiar with Medical and Medicare billing requirements
5. Proficiency with computers, information systems and experience working in a Electronic
Health Record (EHR) environment is highly desirable.
6. Experience in retail optometric practice preferred.
7. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred
8. Must possess strong decision-making skills.
9. Must possess highly effective verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal
skills.
10. Demonstrated ability and competence with EMR and practice management software.
11. Must have experience with vision insurance plans and billing processes.
12. Must be able to maintain an extremely high degree of confidentiality and adhere to all
requirements of the Privacy Act regulations.
13. Ability to work well under pressure, reach sound conclusions and make appropriate
recommendations.
14. Knowledge and understanding of the Native American community is desirable.
15. Compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations, as they pertain to the position
including; HIPAA, sexual harassment, Scope of Practice, OSHA etc.
16. Understands and promotes the mission, vision, and values of the health center both in the
work place and in the community.
