Subspecialty Training Requirements in
Pediatric Radiology
2009

These training requirements apply to those who begin training on or after July 1st, 2009.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Royal College Certification or completion of training in a Royal College approved training
program in Diagnostic Radiology (see requirements for these qualifications). All candidates
must be certified in their primary specialty in order to be eligible to write the Royal College
certification examination in Pediatric Radiology.
MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
One (1) year of approved residency in Pediatric Radiology, which must include exposure to
pediatric Neuroradiology, pediatric head and neck imaging, pediatric thoracic imaging,
pediatric abdominal/pelvic imaging, pediatric musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging, and pediatric
cardiac and vascular imaging. This period must include:
1.
A minimum of six (6) weeks in clinical Pediatric Radiology, with an emphasis on plain
film radiology
2.
A minimum of four (4) weeks of fluoroscopy related to Pediatric Radiology
3.
A minimum of six (6) weeks of ultrasound related to Pediatric Radiology
4.
A minimum of four (4) weeks in Nuclear Medicine related to Pediatric Radiology
5.
A minimum of six (6) weeks in computed tomography (CT) related to Pediatric
Radiology
6.
A minimum of six (6) weeks in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) related to
Pediatric Radiology, which should also include exposure to fetal imaging
7.
A minimum of four (4) weeks of research related to Pediatric Radiology, which may
be completed longitudinally
8.
Sixteen (16) weeks of training subject to the approval of the program director, of
which twelve (12) weeks must be in one or a combination of the following:
8.1. Fluoroscopy
8.2. Ultrasound

NOTES:
Royal College certification in Pediatric Radiology requires all of the following:
1. Royal College certification in Diagnostic Radiology;
2. Successful completion of a 1-year Royal College accredited program in Pediatric
Radiology; and
3. Successful completion of the certification examination in Pediatric Radiology.
The 1-year program outlined above is to be regarded as the minimum training requirement.
Additional training may be required by the program director to ensure that clinical
competence has been achieved.
This one year period should include exposure to image interpretation of pediatric PET-CT
(positron emission tomography) as part of CT and/or nuclear medicine rotation.
During the one-year program, the resident must demonstrate an increasing responsibility in
the care of patients and in the manual and interpretive skills that relate to Pediatric
Radiology. The resident must acquire a broad experience in the performance and
supervision of technical procedures and use of equipment in all pediatric imaging modalities
or techniques.
