Technical Theatre Application Packets Thank you for your interest in participating in Capital High School’s winter production and DramaFest. Putting on a quality production requires the work of a lot of talented people. In order to continue to build on our program, it is essential that students have the opportunity to learn and try new jobs throughout their years at CHS. Therefore, it is my vision that students in the following leadership roles act as teachers to younger or newer students of the theatre. I may assign assistants to different jobs with the expectation that students may teach each other the tricks of the trade. Below is a list of job descriptions and the skills necessary to do these jobs. The asterisk (*) indicates jobs that need to be filled by a junior or senior. Job Descriptions *Technical Director is responsible for the overall direction of all technical aspects of the production. He/She works closely with the Director on all issues, making sure that the Director’s vision is heard and created. The Technical Director must be a strong leader, earning the trust and respect of his/her crew leaders and crews; must be responsible and able to follow directions. This person must be able to delegate work to others. *Stage Manager runs the show during the production and is the Director’s “right hand man/woman.” Other responsibilities include leading actors in warm-ups, writing blocking into the Director’s script, calling lines to actors during rehearsals, assisting with many other miscellaneous matters, and most importantly, calling the cues during the performance. This individual must be a strong leader, earning the trust of the cast and crew; must be responsible and able to follow directions. Set Designer, after reading/analyzing the play and then discussing the vision with the Director, creates a detailed design of the set. Individual should be a visual artist, capable of drawing both a bird’s eye view and a detailed audience view of the set (building a model would also be helpful). The Set Designer also coordinates the colors, tones, and shades to be used in the set, and will need to work closely with lighting, props and costumes to coordinate colors, tones and shades. This individual needs to be able to meet deadlines, work with the Master Carpenter and Scenic Artist during construction of the set, and dress the set for production. *Master Carpenter is responsible for the construction of a safe set. This individual must have skills to lead a group in constructing the set, needs to work well with the set designer, and should have some previous experience in set construction. This person will be responsible for keeping his/her crew safe and the tools and space picked up, swept and organized. Scenic Artist is responsible for the painting of the set. This individual may lead a crew in painting the set pieces or may paint the set on his/her own. This individual should have some painting experience and be able to create different effects through paint. The scenic artist will be responsible for maintaining the paint, brushes and the paint room. Lighting Designer is responsible for setting up and running the lights for the production. This individual may have a crew to assist with spot lights or to help set up for the production. Sound Designer is responsible for identifying, locating and taping or producing live all the sounds needed for the production. He/She will run the soundboard during technical rehearsals and performances. Props Master is responsible for identifying, locating, building, borrowing, gathering, caring for and returning all set furniture, dressings, and props needed for the production. This individual must be very organized. Costume Designer is responsible for identifying, building, buying, borrowing, caring for and returning all costumes and accessories needed by the actors in the production. Most often actors will find their own costumes, but the costume designer should work closely with the actors to ensure quality costumes for the production. Make-up Artist is responsible for identifying needed make-up for the production and assisting actors in applying stage make-up and hair styling for their characters. *Publicist is responsible for planning and executing a poster and publicity campaign to promote the production. This individual will need to secure artwork for the poster and Tshirts. He/She will write a press release to be sent to local newspapers, television and radio stations. The publicist must be reliable and able to meet important deadlines. Program Editor prepares the hard copy of the program which will be presented to the audience. He/She should have an eye for detail and have strong editing skills. This individual will also gather biographies from each participant in the production. *House Manager is responsible for the “house” or the auditorium during the production. He/She will recruit and train ushers, enforce rules of theatre etiquette, inform the stage manager when the “house” is ready for the production to begin, and work with the ushers in cleaning up the auditorium after the show. Crew members work under one of these individuals. These are the “worker bees” that really make things happen. They must be good at following directions and hard working.
