Video Mash-Up – This will be a project done with a partner!
Due Tuesday March 29th, 2016
Overview: You and your partner will replace existing dialog, sound effects,
musical scoring, etc. with creations of your own using GarageBand.
1. Observe/Critique: Watch a few short scenes of commercially produced
films. Discuss how dialog, sound, and music are all used dramatically with
one another to convey the scene.
2. Prepare Video Scene with a length of about 1:30 – 2:00. Audition the
scenes located on Miss Strouse’s Electronic Music website. Pick one that
interests you and your partner.
3. Drag and drop scene into GarageBand’s Track window
a. The movie will appear in GB’s Movie track, with associated audio in an
amber-colored adjacent audio track.
b. Delete the audio track.
4. “Spot” the video, taking notes on important moments and content
needed.
a. Script: What story do you want to tell using either the scene’s actors
delivering new lines, or using a voice-over narration? Think about a
new premise for the scene.
b. Tempo/Mood: Note the pacing (tempo) of the scene. Also, think
about what style/genre the scene suggests to you.
c. Where are the in-scene sound effects used? Make a list of sounds you
will need to find.
5. New Script/Voiceover: After deciding with your partner a new
premise/meaning for the scene, write your script.
a. If actors deliver lines in the scene, write a script with new lines for
each character. TIP: You can write lines for characters to speak
aloud, or lines they are thinking (where you can apply reverb).
b. If there are no actors delivering lines, write a script with (new)
narration for a narrator.
c. Record the new lines/narration with a microphone directly into GB
and cut/move.
6. Locate and add/sync sound effects: You can find good sound effect content
at the following.
a. Sound Effects Drumkit: Create a new software track and assign one of
the sound effect keyboard maps to the track. You’ll notice every key
of the controller keyboard triggers a different sound effect.
Record/sync-in these sounds real-time.
b. Loops: In GB’s Loop Browser (Loop icon), choose the podcast view for
loops, revealing many categories of sound effects loops. Drag-anddrop in these loops as desired.
c. Internet: Visit sound effects websites online, such as SoundBible.com
d. HINT: Remember to use both small scale sound (doorknob turning,
door opening, feet walking, coin dropping, car engine starting, etc.)
and environmental sounds (wind blowing, rain outside house, ocean
waves, background crowd murmuring, street sounds, etc.)
7. Create a musical score.
a. Note where musical scoring would be appropriate/helpful and use
loops, real-time MIDI recording, import of MIDI file, or anything else
you like to set the mood.
b. HINT: Dramatic changes are often supported by changes in layering.
c. Automate Volume: Bring score down underneath dialog/narration,
swell for dramatic effect.
8. Export Movie. From GB’s share menu, choose “export movie.”
