BIO
In 2008, composer Matthew Peterson left North Dakota for Sweden. Since then, the Stockholm-based
freelance composer has explored frontiers of sound and expression in music featuring vivid orchestrations,
rhythmic vibrancy, expressive clarity, and emotional depth. His expansive output ranges from a chamber
opera based on Wisconsin court cases, to modern settings of sacred texts, to stunning orchestral soundscapes.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
Matthew has been awarded the Fulbright Grant to Sweden, grand prize in the 2014 Uppsala tonsättartävling,
the 2014 ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Award, 2015 Minnesota Orchestra composer institute, two BMI student
composer awards, the 2014 Fort Worth Opera Frontiers Festival award for chamber opera, and other honors,
awards and recognitions from: ASCAP, Manhattan Beach Music, Third Angle ensemble, New Lens concert
series, Opera Vista, North-South Consonance, Indiana University, Boston Choral Ensemble, National Opera
Association, vocal ensemble Chanticleer, Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra, Forth Worth Opera, Vocal
Essence, and St. Olaf College.
PERFORMANCES
Over 60 of Matthew’s works have been performed or are scheduled to be performed by orchestras including
the Minnesota Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony,
Uppsala kammarorkester, Dalasinfoniettan, Gävle Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Nordisk
kammarorkester, St. Olaf Orchestra, Vanemuine Symphony, Aldworth Philharmonic, Jönköpings sinfonietta,
and Norrlandsopera orkester; choirs including Chanticleer, Academic Women’s Chorus of the University of
Tartu, Vocal Essence, Cantus Novus, and College of New Jersey Choir; bands including Univ. of ND Wind
Ensemble, CO State Univ. Symphonic Band, and St. Olaf Band; chamber ensembles including Norrbotten
NEO, Finasterra Trio, Panic Duo, Third Angle Ensemble, Freya String Quartet, New Music Conflagration,
North/South Consonance, Boston Percussion Group, and Innovox; electronic music presenters including
Indiana University CECM, Circuit Bridges, and Frame Dance Productions; opera companies Washington
National Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Milwaukee Skylight Theater, Opera Vista, and St. Olaf Lyric Theater; and
numerous soloists. Matthew’s orchestra works have been broadcast on National Public Radio (US) and
Sweden’s Radio P2.
