GGDA POSITION ON ENERGY “To make Gauteng the continental manufacturing and services hub for Energy and related industries” OPPORTUNITIES FROM GREEN STRATEGIC PROGRAMME (GSP) Alternative and Efficient Fuel Technologies • Objective 5.1: 15% reduction in energy demand in the transport sector by 2025 through a series of transport efficiency investments. Modal shift towards public transport, freight to Rail, etc. to reduce demand for energy by the transport sector. • Objective 5.2: Reduce dependence on fossil fuels in transport systems. Encourage uptake of efficient and alternatively-powered vehicles such as hybrid, electric and gas powered vehicles, considered infrastructure needs to enable these alternative fuels to be used. DEPARTMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT Solar Rooftops It is estimated that the rollout of 300MW in 8 million square meters of roof tops could cost approximately R6 billion (R20 million per MW). The entire cost can be funded through energy savings with a pay-back period of about 7 years. A number of private sector companies are currently exploring opportunities to invest in the establishment of solar panel manufacturing facilities in South Africa. A standard factory producing up to 150MW/year can be set up in period of 6-12 months. Other Opportunities 1. Landfill gas for supplying gas to boilers 2. Waste to Energy Programme for health institutions 3. Water Efficiency Retrofit Programme 4. Integrated Building Management Systems (IBMS) 5. Bicycle Lane from Gillooly’s Farm to Braamfontein 6. Renewable energy technologies for schools CONCLUSION: TRILEMMAS, NEXA AND THE FUTURE Energy Security The effective management of primary energy supply from domestic and external sources, the reliability of energy infrastructure, and the ability of energy providers to meet current and future demand. Changing Game 1. New Oil Discoveries 2. Natural Gas Discoveries 3. Shale Gas 4. Fuel Innovation 5. Logistics 6. Rise of the Elements 7. Microgrids and Off Grids Energy Equity Accessibility and affordability of energy supply across the population. Environmental Sustainability 8. Changing Geopolitics Encompasses the achievement of supply and demand side energy efficiencies and the development of energy supply from renewable and other low-carbon sources.
