Contents Taskforce Project outline Taskforce Projects WA Cancer Taskforce Project Spotlight on: Progress update February 2016 Taskforce Project Outline In April 2015, the Acting Director General of WA Health, Prof Bryant Stokes, established the WA Cancer Taskforce chaired by Professor Christobel Saunders to seek clinician advice on current issues facing the provision of adult cancer services in Western Australia. Fourteen Taskforce recommendations were developed into a program plan for action, commencing late 2015. To deliver efficient and affordable cancer services and meet patient access to care requirements, collaboration is required across health sectors, area health services, hospital departments and specialties. Coordinated, robust strategic service development is required to achieve further system reform. The program will be highly engaged with the clinical and patient community. Governance The aims of the WA Adult Cancer Care Taskforce Recommendation Program are to: • Improve access to coordinated services • Increase the timeliness of care • Improve the safety and quality outcomes for patients • Improve the patient experience throughout the cancer care pathway • Enhance staff satisfaction by streamlining process and using our valuable human resources in the most effective way Key points: • Expert Advisory Cancer Group (EACG) established • EACG met 25 November 2015 • Project Officers assigned to tasks • Schedule for project team meetings established and commenced • Project scoping commenced Contact Cancer Taskforce Team: [email protected] health.wa.gov.au Taskforce Projects Project Title Re-establishment of oncology service at RPH 1 2 Audit of treatment wait times 3 MDT meetings included as part of the scheduled timetable of all cancer clinicians 4 Clerical and IT support for all MDT meetings 5 Reintroduction of Clinical Nurse Specialist roles 6 Establish a standing expert advisory group on cancer 7 Data management at cancer centres 8 (A) Sub-specialist care in uncommon cancers be confined to limited tertiary centres (B) Audit Surgical Care Outcomes 9 Multidisciplinary diagnostic clinics explored 10 Explore development of a WA State-wide Cancer Service 11 Cancer care pathways review 12 Dedicated surgical oncology training track 13 Support the cancer workforce nursing project Access to psycho-social support, as required 14 Projects will be implemented over a two-year period. Commencement dates and duration will vary. Spotlight on: Governance Expert Advisory Cancer Group (EACG) The EACG is a standing expert advisory group on cancer established by the Director General of WA Health, Dr David Russel-Weisz, to monitor implementation of agreed initiatives and address future challenges. Membership closely aligns with the WA Cancer & Palliative Care Network and its tumour collaboratives and respective lead clinicians, and includes both senior cancer clinicians and patient advocates. The EACG met 25 November 2015 and will convene every two months for the duration of program delivery. health.wa.gov.au
