Heart Health Programme Facilitator Training Friday 6th May - 9.30-3.30pm Lecture Theatre, Fern House Antrim Course Content The Heart Health toolkit is a new and innovative programme developed in the NHSCT to increase the knowledge, awareness and skills of staff/volunteers working with or supporting people with a learning disability and their carers. The programme focuses on the key messages of heart health, nutrition and physical activity. Delivery of the Heart Health programme will support positive health outcomes for people with a learning disability with regard to concerns relating to overweight and obesity. This course will introduce participants to the toolkits key messages and accompanying resources which will support the delivery of Heart Health programmes in a range of settings. This will include information on: Prevalence of overweight/obesity Brief overview of the key messages of the toolkit sessions, including: o How the heart works o Healthy eating o Healthy weight o Diabetes/sugar o Physical activity & having fun o High blood pressure/Stress/Smoking/Alcohol How to plan your heart health programme Communicating with a person with a learning disability Who should attend? Staff/volunteers working with or supporting people with a learning disability and their carers who have the capacity to deliver the 8 week Heart Health programme to groups and/or on a one to one basis. On completion, facilitators will receive a Heart Health Toolkit containing a facilitator manual outlining the 8 sessions along with a range of resources and materials to support delivery of the programme for people with a learning disability. Expectation Participants attending the training are expected to deliver at least 2 Heart Health programmes on completion of the training with the aim of embedding the Heart Health within their programme of activities.
