A stringed instrument from India.
Mainly used in classical Indian music.
One of the most popular and prominent instruments in
Hindustani classical music along with the sitar.
A contrasting instrument to the sitar with a deep
introspective sound.
A fretless instrument able to produce continuous slides
between notes which is an important part of Indian music.
It’s a descendant of the Afghan Rubab which originates from
central Asia and Afghanistan
The conventional sarod is a 17 to 25-stringed lute-like
instrument-four to five main strings used for playing the
melody, one or two drone strings, two chikari strings and nine
to eleven sympathetic strings.
The lack of frets and the tension of the strings make the sarod
a very demanding instrument to play, as the strings must be
pressed hard against the fingerboard.
What is the sarangi
The sarangi is a bowed,
short-necked string
instrument from South
Asia which originated
from Gandarbha folk
instruments. It is said to
most resemble the sound
of the human voice

It is a traditional Indian instrument,
similar to harmonium.
The Shruti box was used to produce
the drone (the long and continuously
sounded tone or chord).
Nowdays the Indians use electronic
shruti boxes.




Carnatic from from the south, hindustani
from the north.
The use of gamaka in the carnatic style sets
them apart.
A gamaka is an ‘embellishment’ of a raga.
Also more ragas in carnatic music, because
they use shrutis(semitones)


The ragas have different names, even if they
are the same.
Carnatic music does not stay to a ceratin
timing, or Samay, or thaats?? And instead
follows the melakarta concept.
Memorise this rag!
