ABOUT THIS GUIDE
This guide contains critical information for Molecular Devices customers,
customer service engineers, applications scientists, and others who need to
properly prepare for the installation and use of software components of the
Complete Imaging Solution.
1.2.
DEFINITIONS
The computer that is connected to the Molecular Devices imaging hardware is
referred to as the instrument workstation (it is also sometimes referred to as
the acquisition computer). Any computers running the MetaXpress® Software,
the MetaXpress® PowerCore™ Software, or the AcuityXpress™ Software that
are not connected to the Molecular Devices imaging hardware are referred to
as personal workstations (they are sometimes also referred to as offline
workstations). Both instrument workstations and personal workstations are
considered clients of the database. The figure in section 1.3 describes the
computer configuration of a multi-user environment of Molecular Devices
complete imaging solution, which combines the instrument workstation
(provided with the Molecular Devices imaging hardware) and multiple
personal workstations and servers.
Depending on the needs of your organization, Molecular Devices suggests a
variety of computer configurations for multi-user environments. A typical
configuration for a multi-user environment is described in the next section.
Before attempting the installation of any component of the Molecular Devices
Complete Solution for HCS, it is critical that the customers have been
provided with an overview of the IT environment. Please have your Molecular
Devices sales representatives put you in touch with an application scientist or
support to schedule an overview of the document entitled Molecular Devices
Complete Solution HCS IT Presentation.

TYPICAL CONFIGURATIONS FOR
MULTI-USER ENVIRONMENTS
HCS generates vast amounts of data. Below is an example of configuration for
a Core Facility lab or a medium throughput facility with 2 instruments,
multiple screens per year, generating 100 GB per day, 5 days per week
(~500 GB per week; ~20 to 30 TB per year) and requiring multiple databases
and file storage locations.
This configuration is given as an example. Your throughput might be different,
and you might not be using the MetaXpress PowerCore Software technology
altering your specific configuration.
Note: Virtual computer configurations are not supported.

NOTE ON THE INSTALLATION
PROCESS
The installation of the ImageXpress® instrument and the Instrument
Workstation will be performed by Molecular Devices service engineers.
The installation and maintenance of all software on other clients and servers,
including Molecular Devices software and the database software, such as
Oracle or MS SQL Server, should be performed by the customer.
CAUTION: To get the best performance from Molecular Devices
Complete Solution for Cellular Imaging, customers must
seek professional help with installation, configuration, and
optimization of database server and client products. In
particular, a database administrator with the proper
expertise must configure and optimize, or tune, your
database for your facility.
If you do not have a database administrator, contact
Molecular Devices for a list of consultants.
The instructions provided with Molecular Devices
documentation for Oracle database and Microsoft SQL are
offered for guidance only as Oracle and Microsoft SQL are
not products of Molecular Devices. For more information
about database installation, security, operation, and

REQUIREMENTS BEFORE THE ONSITE INSTALLATION OF MOLECULAR
DEVICES INSTRUMENTATION BY
MOLECULAR DEVICES PERSONNEL
1. The customer is responsible for purchasing and pre-installing all necessary
software licenses for database client personal workstations. Computers,
operating systems and database server software used to run the Molecular
Devices Complete Solution should at least meet the minimum
specifications outlined in the document entitled Molecular Devices
Complete Solution HCS Computer Specifications available on Molecular
Devices website or through your Molecular Devices Technical Support.
2. Installation of Molecular Devices software and software updates will
require administrator privileges on all applicable computers.
3. If the customer elects to install Molecular Devices software with
connection to an existing MDCStore database on a remote server the
customer must pre-install that server and open the firewall ports per
Molecular Devices requirements (see Table 1: IT Network Ports and
Protocols), to ensure proper communication with the instrument
workstation.
4. The network connection between the instrument workstation and an
existing customer database server or file server requires that all firewalls
and routers be configured to allow data transfer between all of the
applicable computers. Default ports for the database and file server
manager are listed in Table 1: IT Network Ports and Protocols.
5. The customer must assign a routable IP address and DNS resolvable name
path for the database and file server.
6. The customer will have the option of configuring connections by computer
name (preferred) or IP address. If the customer elects to use IP
addresses, it is recommended that they be static. If DHCP is required to
be enabled, then a constant IP address must be assigned to each
database and file server.
7. If configuring connections by computer name, first verify that you can
ping the database and file server computers from the location where the
instrument workstation will be installed, using the computer names.
Note: Changing the computer name after establishing connections
will cause errors, and information will need to be updated in
the database.
8. The customer will be responsible for installation and maintenance of
database software, such as Oracle or MS SQL Server, on their database
server.

IT REQUIREMENTS TO SET UP: METAXPRESS® SOFTWARE, METAXPRESS® POWERCORE™ SOFTWARE,
ACUITYXPRESS™ SOFTWARE,AND MDCSTORE™ DATA MANAGEMENT SOLUTION
9. The database software employed, such as Oracle or MS SQL Server, must
be of a version compatible with the MetaXpress Software, the MetaXpress
PowerCore Software, or AcuityXpress Software as outlined in the
document entitled Molecular Devices Complete Solution HCS Computer
Specifications available on Molecular Devices website or through your
Molecular Devices Technical Support.
10. Both the database server software as well as the operating system should
be installed with U.S. English as the language setting. MDCStore database
will not work with other language settings.
11. For optimum performance the computer hosting the MDCStore database
should be dedicated to the Molecular Devices application.
12. To install MDCStore on a database server will require the use of the “sa”
(MS SQL Server) or “system” (Oracle) user login. After the MDCStore
database schema is installed, Molecular Devices strongly recommends to
create an MDCStore Lab Head account with administrative privileges and
remove “sa” or “system” accounts from the MDCStore user list. Details of
this procedure are described in the “Managing User Accounts and Groups”
chapter of the MDCStoreTools Data Management Utility User Guide. The
script needed for the MDCStore database installation is available on the
installation CD or from the knowledge base on the Molecular Devices
support site at www.moleculardevices.com/support.html.
13. If the customer elects to use an Oracle database, the appropriate client
software should be pre-installed and tested on each of the applicable
computers. A license for the database software should be purchased from
the manufacturer prior to installation of MetaXpress Software or
AcuityXpress Software, and should be available for installation on the
instrument workstation at the time of system installation. Instrument
workstations supplied by Molecular Devices include a single license of the
MS SQL Server client.
14. The customer should establish ODBC system data source connections to
the MDCStore database on all applicable computers.
15. Instrument workstations supplied by Molecular Devices are equipped with
gigabit Ethernet cards. In order to ensure the full capability of data
transfer, we highly recommend gigabit-capable firewalls, routers, and
cabling (cat 6) for use with all applicable computers. Unreliable, nondedicated networks and communication across sub-networks will greatly
affect the performance of data transfer. Consult with our support team to
determine the optimal set-up for your infrastructure
16. The customer is responsible for account management and user access
control between the instrument workstation and any database or file
server computers.

DURING ON-SITE INSTALLATION OF
MOLECULAR DEVICES
INSTRUMENTATION BY MOLECULAR
DEVICES PERSONNEL
1. At the time of system installation, the customer is required to supply
Molecular Devices with the information requested in Table 2: Customer
Pre-Install Checklist, to ensure the proper communication with the
database server.
2. The customer must ensure that persons who will be responsible for
database or file server installation and maintenance will be available at
the time of system install and during scheduled training sessions.
3. Some IT departments require that computer names conform to corporate
standards. If the name of the instrument workstation must be changed,
for any reason, it should be changed during system installation. This will
allow the on-site Molecular Devices representative to properly configure
computer connections with the new computer name.
IMPORTANT: If the computer name is changed, the customer risks
loss of database connectivity, data corruption, and data
loss.
4. The customer is responsible for purchasing and pre-installing all necessary
software licenses for database client personal workstations. For minimum
and recommended personal workstation specifications, please refer to the
document entitled Molecular Devices Complete Solution HCS Computer
Specifications available on Molecular Devices website or through your
Molecular Devices Technical Support.
5. The instrument workstation provided by Molecular Devices is supplied with
licenses for several different software applications (for example,
Windows 7 OS, MS Excel, MS SQL Server, and so on). During on-site
installation, installation disks and license documentation for these
software applications will be handed over to the customer. It is the
responsibility of the customer to keep all of these supplied items in a safe
place, and to make them available to Molecular Devices personnel if
software re-installation is required for servicing the system. If the
customer is unable to make these items available to Molecular Devices
personnel when required for servicing the system, a replacement fee
might be charged.
6. Create a dedicated drive or partition for data storage. Do not use the drive
on which the computer OS is installed for image file storage or installation
of the database.
IT REQUIREMENTS TO SET UP: METAXPRESS® SOFTWARE, METAXPRESS® POWERCORE™ SOFTWARE,
ACUITYXPRESS™ SOFTWARE,AND MDCSTORE™ DATA MANAGEMENT SOLUTION
7. Some IT departments require that users not have administrative rights on
client computers. If this is the case the IT department must give full
control (read, write, and modify) to all users for the following folders:




x:\MX (or whatever folder MX is installed in)
x:\Analysis
x:\Assay
x:\Backup
8. Molecular Devices recommends having an Internet connection available on
the instrument workstation during installation. An Internet connection
enables Molecular Devices personnel to download the latest version of the
MetaXpress Software, and obtain software registration codes required for
the system installation. The installation process might be prolonged if an
Internet connection is not available. The Internet connection can be
removed after system installation is complete.
1.7.
POST-INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
1. The customer is responsible for installing the MetaXpress Software,
MetaXpress PowerCore Software, and AcuityXpress Software on all
personal workstations. Please refer to the appropriate Installation
Procedures for instructions.
CAUTION: To get the best performance from Molecular Devices
Complete Solution for Cellular Imaging, customers must
seek professional help with installation, configuration, and
optimization of database server and client products. In
particular, a database administrator with the proper
expertise must configure and optimize, or tune, your
database for your facility.
If you do not have a database administrator, contact
Molecular Devices for a list of consultants.
The instructions provided with Molecular Devices
documentation for Oracle database and Microsoft SQL are
offered for guidance only as Oracle and Microsoft SQL are
not products of Molecular Devices. For more information
about database installation, security, operation, and
optimization, contact the appropriate software vendor.
2. The instrument workstation provided by Molecular Devices ships with antivirus software installed. It is the customer’s responsibility to keep the
anti-virus software configuration up-to-date, in order to avoid security
risks and virus threats to the computer. Molecular Devices will not be held
responsible for viruses or security attacks on the computer. Updating the
virus definitions while the instrument workstation is in use can result in
performance issues and should be avoided.
IT REQUIREMENTS TO SET UP: METAXPRESS® SOFTWARE, METAXPRESS® POWERCORE™ SOFTWARE,
ACUITYXPRESS™ SOFTWARE,AND MDCSTORE™ DATA MANAGEMENT SOLUTION
PAGE 9 OF 14
IMPORTANT: Stringent anti-virus settings may affect the rate of
data transfer or operation of the imaging instrument, the
instrument workstation, the MDCStore database, or any
client of the database. After setting the anti-virus
software, verify that the anti-virus settings do not change
the performance of the overall system (that is, without
anti-virus software).
3. To run the MetaXpress PowerCore Software, firewalls must permit UDP
and TCP communications on the ports in use. Antivirus software needs to
be configured to allow UDP and TCP transmissions on the ports in use.
Please refer to Table 1: IT Network Ports and Protocols for details.
4. Molecular Devices support personnel might request third-party software to
be uninstalled from MetaXpress Software, MetaXpress Power Core
Software, or AcuityXpress Software computers for troubleshooting
purposes. In general, Molecular Devices highly recommends using the
Instrument workstation for MetaXpress Software acquisition and analysis
only. Running other applications concurrently with MetaXpress Software
should be avoided.
5. The customer is responsible for installing database client software (Oracle
or MS SQL Server) on personal workstations. The customer is also
responsible for configuring database connections on such computers. For
instructions on configuring database connections, see the MDCStore
Database Schema Installation and Update Guide.
Note: Avoid installation of both Oracle and MS SQL on the same
server.
6. The customer is responsible for maintaining and regulating user access
between personal workstations, database servers, and file servers.
Note: Security login errors, such as domain updates should be
checked for validity and the windows event should be
monitored
7. The person responsible for updating and maintaining the MetaXpress
Software, databases, and file servers must have administrator-level
privileges on all applicable computers.
8. Database maintenance such as, but not limited to, removing deleted data,
re-indexing, and backing up will diminish performance and should not be
performed concurrently with acquisition or analysis.
IT REQUIREMENTS TO SET UP: METAXPRESS® SOFTWARE, METAXPRESS® POWERCORE™ SOFTWARE,
ACUITYXPRESS™ SOFTWARE,AND MDCSTORE™ DATA MANAGEMENT SOLUTION
9. Molecular Devices recommends that all Windows user accounts on all
computers running the imaging software (MetaXpress Software,
MetaXpress PowerCore Software, or AcuityXpress Software) should be
given full access to any UNC path configured as a file server. The
customer is responsible for any IT issues resulting from not following this
recommendation. If the customer IT department configures multiple UNC
paths with different permissions, they must attempt to configure the
permissions hierarchy of the database and Windows users similarly.
10. All users must have full read/write/modify privileges to all the folders
created during MetaXpress Software installation: C:\assay, C:\backup,
C:\analysis, and the MetaXpress directory (such as, C:\MX; C:\MX2,
C:\MX3, or C:\MX4.)
11. Windows workstations, analysis clients, and servers should be configured
to never go into sleep, standby, or hibernate mode. The option to
automatically restart the computer after a windows update should be
disabled.
12. Molecular Devices recommends turning off automatic Windows updates on
all acquisition computers, since this might cause a restart of the computer
during the middle of an acquisition.
13. It is the sole responsibility of the customer to back up system data. The
instrument workstation supplied by Molecular Devices includes a license of
Norton Ghost (drive-imaging software), for the purpose of creating a
backup file of the instrument workstation hard drive only. This software
needs to be configured to your specifications. This type of backup file is
useful in the event of computer or hard drive failure, allowing faster
restoration of system operation.
IMPORTANT: A back-up of the system should be performed only
when the instrument workstation or personal workstation
are not in use.
14. It is the sole responsibility of the customer to backup data from all of
computers running Molecular Devices software, including the instrument
workstation supplied with the Molecular Devices imaging hardware.
15. It is the sole responsibility of the customer to monitor a space available
for storage of data (database and file systems) and make sure that
amount of free space always corresponds with recommended criteria.
16. Customers who want to integrate the MDCStore database into their own
corporate database, can request an open API document from their
Molecular Devices sales representative. Database integration is the sole
responsibility of the customer, and Molecular Devices cannot be held
responsible for data corruption, loss, or failure caused by this process.
IMPORTANT: Molecular Devices is not responsible for backing up
data, and cannot be held responsible for data loss or
corruption, due to computer failure or any other cause.
