propertiescomparetoitsbulk[1].Farfrombeingonlyascientificallypeculiarfact,
importantphenomenathataffectenvironmentalchangesonaglobalscaleare
linkedtothemolecularcompositionatthisregion[2].Indeedtheuptakeofgas
phasemoleculesbyliquidsisasurfacephenomenonandthemoleculespresent
atthatregionultimatelywilldrivetheadsorptionrate.Forexampletheup-take
ofcarbondioxidebyseawaterwilldependonwhatprotonatedspeciesareatthe

adsorptionofCO2,maydrasticallyaffectmarinelifepopulation.Modelingfuture
chancesmorepreciselyarekeytoamelioratetheproblem,whichcritically
dependsonourknowledgeabouttheprocessesinvolved.Aerosols,presentalso
attheupperatmosphere,areamajorunknowninclimatemodels[3].These
particlesaretypicallyamixtureofbothorganicandinorganicmolecules.Dueto
theirreducedsize,itisunlikelythatusingtheaveragebulkcompositionwillbe
sufficienttodescribeitsclimaterelevantproperties.WeplantoshowhowXPS,
whichissurfacesensitiveandelementspecific,canhelpimprovingthepresent
knowledgeinthearea.
