United States citizens have a traditional value of the American Dream, which is based on when citizens
work hard and follow the laws then they can earn money to have a good and stable life. Therefore, a
good leader has a responsibility to make the American dream possible to achieve and make citizens to
have a hope to believe that is possible. To achieve this goal of the American dream, a good leader must
include a few characteristics on the leadership. Such as provide opportunities to minority, which can
provide a hope to minority as part of the group of Americans who can make the goal of American
dreams. This can also let the minority believe the government will be on their side and helping them.
Government has to provide a good economy to let the minority to have an opportunity to achieve the
goal of American dream by maintaining their income from the economy. To ensure the economy goes
well, a good leader has to protect the country and its citizen’s security because the economy is based on
the stable life and peaceful of the country. When a threat or crisis comes to the country and affect the
security, a good leader’s determination on making a critical decision during a crisis that can affect the
country's security is very important. Therefore, a leader who contains these characteristics above of
being a good leader can lead the country and the citizens through maintaining peace and justice and
help the citizens to achieve the traditional value of the American dream.
There are two leaders who have a similarity of being a good leader on the different age of the United
States' history. They are Barack Obama and John F. Kennedy, both of them have good characteristics in
common and both of them have been struggling in different circumstances and times. Firstly, Kennedy is
the first Irish-Catholic president of the United States and Barack Obama is the first America African
president of the United States. That shows the result of providing opportunities to the minor groups on
politics, whether in different races or religions. This makes the citizens believe the minority can also
have an opportunity to be a successful professional person on this country and belongs to the country.
Secondly, Kennedy and Obama need to face the different crisis while they are being the president.
When Kennedy is the president, United States and Soviet Union are the two powerful countries on the
time. Since both countries are very powerful, Soviet Union automatically becomes a threat to United
States because of the both countries tries to get benefits from each others for their citizens. Since both
countries were during an invisible competition between each other in order to prove which the best
country on the world is during the 60’s. Soviet Union first sends the first human on the space which
shows the advance of space science during the competition with United States. Therefore, President
Kennedy put a strong position to deal with these threats created by Soviet Union, such as announces the
space program to catch up on the science power of space with Soviet Union. The space program set by
President Kennedy was a goal to send the first human on the moon.
After the space program was announced, John F. Kennedy showed a positive position as a leader on the
issue of competition with Soviet Union. This position can make the citizens understand the leadership of
the country which is determined to accept challenge with the competitor. Therefore, that shows the
leader is good enough to maintain the country’s well being and the citizens’ quality of life, to make the
goal of American dream becomes possible, which is based the country is strong and advanced. “This
week, Astronauts Walter Schirra, Walter Cunningham and Donn Eisele will be shot into earth orbit
aboard Apollo 7 in the first manned flight of the spacecraft that will eventually carry astronauts to the
moon.” Furthermore, President Kennedy could set a goal and achieves it during this critical time of the
competition with Soviet Union. That shows the other statistics of being a good leader, to keep the
promises to the citizens. “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this
decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.”- “A Chance to Be First”
by John F. Kennedy, May 25, 1961. After that, Soviet Union creates a conflict with United States by
placing nuclear missiles on Cuba which is a threat to United States' citizens by aims on the United States.
President Kennedy announces that it would not permit offensive weapons to be delivered to Cuba, to
try to resolve the conflict with Soviet Union. Therefore, the position shows President Kennedy is a good
leader by resolve the crisis of the country with a huge courage and wisdom. Beside that, President can
afford the pressure of the threat and makes a critical decision effectively. That shows the leadership is
decisive to response on the citizens and the country’s security.
On the other hand, during the time when Obama is the president of United States, United States is
during an economic crisis after 2009. Millions of United States’ citizens were affected by the crisis from
losing jobs to maintain daily life. Therefore, President Obama decided to save the economy from the
crisis by proposing a deficit-cutting plan.” one with substantial tax reform and revenue increases, a
gasoline tax, deep defense cuts and cutbacks to both Social Security and Medicare.” The deficits-cutting
plan is to collect different parts of the social classes’ taxes together as a contribution to boom the
economy growth. “But everyone, including the middle class, has to contribute something. This has to be
a national effort.” The deficits plan can save the economy and help citizens to recover their quality of
life, to keep the citizens believe the government will be on their side during a crisis. Furthermore, a
leader must have courage to lead the people to overcome from a critical issue. Firstly, President Obama
has promised to make the goal of cutting half the deficits and it is almost successes apparently.
Therefore, that increase the popularity of President Obama from fulfills his promise of ensures the
economy goes well. Secondly, the entire president election is another challenge for Barack Obama to
prove he is good enough to be a leader again. Obama has to defend his position from his competitor,
the other candidate, Mitt Romney. The critical point of this president election is President Obama could
take a risk on taking the mission of saving the economy on the critical time during the economy crisis.
That makes Obama gain people's trust from achieve this goal successfully and make the American dream
possible. Therefore people would vote for Obama because Obama gives his citizens a faith as being a
good leader, and make him to be elected as the president again. “One that begins with him taking all the
political risks on himself and then demanding the G.O.P. and his own party follow -- he will be both
defining himself and the future in a way that would earn him so much centrist support and respect that
it would leave every possible Republican opponent in the dust, no matter how obstructionist they are or
want to be. Go big, Mr. President. You will win, and so will America."
President Obama has made a collect decision to gain the voter’s trust on the entire election. Therefore,
Obama is elected to be the president of United States again and carried on the mission of achieve the
goal of American dream. Compare with President Kennedy, President Obama has made a good job on
his career on this stage of the leadership, which provide a security to the country and citizens by resolve
the Cuba missiles crisis. Therefore, both of President Kennedy and President Obama are good leaders,
who can provide a security to the country and citizens in order to achieve the American dream.
