With these three measurements, HDI attempts
to give the crude levels of economic and social
development.
Infrastructure

Structures such as roads, railways, power
grids, and communications links that are
basic to the functioning of a modern
economy, as well as buildings such as
schools and hospitals.
Developed Country

A country with a highly developed
economy – strong service sector and
typically an industrial base. High standards
of living, high literacy, health services, and
food supplies.
Developing Country

Economy which depends more on primary
industry with a lower standard of living.
What is primary industry?
Structural Adjustment Program

A program in which debtor governments
agree to encourage foreign investment,
grow cash crops for export, and have
some government services run by private
companies.
Multi-national Corporations

A large company that operates in more
than one country.
Currently, MNC’s have more assets and
annual income than developing countries,
and have both economic and political
power.
Bilateral Aid

Aid given from one country to another.
Sometimes this aid becomes tied.

Tied Aid:
Aid which comes with conditions.
Multilateral Aid

Multiple governments fund aid.

EG: World Bank.
