Pain Clinic Staff
Clinical Exposure
The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is a
tertiary care,
university-affiliated,
teaching hospital on three campuses
(Civic, General and Riverside).
TOH Pain Clinic is staffed by 8-10
experienced anesthesiologists from both
the Civic and General campuses. We are
assisted by RNs, RPN ’ s and clerical
workers.
The fellow will have the
opportunity to work with medical staff
from Palliative care, Diagnostic Imaging
and allied health professionals from The
Rehabilitation Centre Pain Program.
Fellows will become experts at
diagnosing, managing and treating
(counselling, pharmacotherapy and
interventions) chronic pain and
cancer pain. The fellow will be
exposed to both inpatient and
outpatient
pain
consultations.
Interventional techniques offered in
TOH Pain Clinic include but are not
limited to: basic steroid injections,
fluoroscopic-guided blocks (e.g.
celiac plexus, lumbar sympathetic),
radiofrequency ablation, intraspinal
catheters
for
cancer
pain,
intraspinal drug trials and spinal
cord stimulation.

TOH Pain Clinic
The Pain Clinic at TOH is a new
facility recently opened in the critical
care wing of the General campus. It
is a 4,500 square foot space divided
into a lead-lined fluoro suite, 7
exam/treatment rooms, 4 bed
recovery area, central work station
and reception/office area.
It is
designed for multiple physicians,
residents, and fellow to work and
collaborate
in
an
interactive
environment.

The pain clinic is well equipped with
monitors, C-arm, radiolucent X-Ray
table,
ultrasound
machine,
radiofrequency ablation machine,
nerve stimulator, and cryoprobe.
Organization
In general, the fellow will be assigned
three (3) days per week in the Pain
Clinic, one (1) day per week in the OR
administering anesthetics and one (1)
day per week for academic activities
and research. Rotation through the
Acute
Pain
Service
is
also
incorporated into the fellowship.
