Cancer Research Project
This unit project focuses on what happens when cells do not function correctly. Many people are affected
by cancer; you may even have some family members or friends that have or have had cancer. For this project, you
will research a particular type of cancer. I suggest that you choose a cancer that affects someone you know or
intrigues you because it is interesting. The goal is to research the cancer and present information using Power Point.
The project is due in two weeks and is worth 85 points. Grading will be based on content, quality, and appearance.
The following criteria must be fulfilled :
1. Choose one type of cancer to research :
- See back side.
2. Title Slide : (5 Points)
- Title
- Subtitle (Catchy and descriptive)
- Include a picture.
4. Symptoms Slide : (12 Points)
- Define the type of cancer.
- What are variations of the cancer?
- What happens to infected cells?
- What part of the body is generally affected?
- List possible effects on the body.
- Include a picture
5. Causes / Diagnosis Slide : (12 Points)
- What causes the cancer? (Environmental, Lifestyle, Inherited, etc.)
- How common is the cancer?
- Is it more prevalent in certain populations?
- What tests are performed to diagnose the cancer?
- Are scans done with MRI, CAT scan, PET scan, X-ray, or ultrasound machines?
- Include a picture
6. Prevention / Treatment Slide : (12 points)
- What can be done to prevent getting your chosen cancer?
- How is the cancer treated?
- Medications
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
- Nutrition
- Lifestyle Choices
- Include a picture
7. Interesting Facts : (12 Points)
- List 5 general facts about your chosen cancer.
- Do not use “fluff” facts
- Include a picture (possibly a tribute picture?)
8. Literature Cited : (12 Points)
- List 5 sources (do not need to cite pictures)
- Include a picture
9. Appearance : (10 Points)
- Organize!, Organize!, Organize!
- Bullet information with “dot-jots” (DO NOT use large paragraphs or long sentences)
- Avoid “dead space” – Give the slide some symmetry
10. Presentation : (10 Points)
- If you present, you get the points. If you do not present, you get zero points.
