Komm, süßer Tod
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Bach was primarily a composer and organist. His compositions are distinct and
varied, incorporating techniques and styles of earlier generations, while still
pushing towards a new era of composition.
Come, sweet death, come blessed rest!
Come lead me to peace,
For I am weary of the world,
Oh come! I wait for you,
Come soon and lead me,
Close my eyes.
Come, blessed rest!
Bushes and Briars
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
Vaughan Williams was a composer, teacher, writer, and conductor. He was one of
the most important English composers of his generation, a key figure in the 20th
century revival of British music. This folk-song was the first that Vaughan Williams
collected in 1903.

El Grillo
Josquin Des Prez (1450-1521)
As one of the greatest composers of his era, Des Prez’s compositions outlined the
transition between Medieval and Renaissance music. This piece is translated to tell
a story about a cricket who sings all day long. Unlike the birds who sing and fly
away, he remains where he is, singing for love.
Wondrous cool, thou woodland quiet
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Brahms, continuing the legacy of great German composers, shocked the late 19th
century with his passionate music rooted in centuries worth of folk, dance, and art
music. While at first seeming too reactionary and progressive, his works were
accepted later in his life.
Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone
John Farmer (c1570-1601)
Farmer was an English composer who was appointed Organist and Master of the
Children at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. This piece can be considered one of
the most popular English madrigals. He utilizes text-painting throughout the piece,
truly emulating the text.
The Long Day Closes
Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900)
Sullivan is best known for his work with partner W.S. Gilbert on operettas and
other musical genres. Here he shows a different side in his compositional style. As
a group, we chose this piece for the sentimental impact it has had on us.
Welcome. This program is to raise funds for the new Kathi Best Choral Music
Scholarship at Lyons Township High School. We first discussed the idea of a summer
singing ensemble in early spring and decided to hold a concert in honor of someone
truly special to us. Mrs. Best has inspired hundreds of young musicians to strive to
reach their potential. We wish her the best in her retirement.
After many meetings and discussions between the two of us, we set out for
our first rehearsal, which consisted of 2 altos, 3 basses, and a whole stack of
unlearned music. At first we were nervous, but things eventually progressed from
there. Our dreams and efforts were met fully by everyone involved; they shared our
passion for singing together. Inspired by what was achieved in such a short amount
of time, the two of us look forward to next summer when we will be creating new
goals and expanding our ideas. We are excited for tonight as we hold our first
concert. Your continued support for us and your donations for the scholarship are
greatly appreciated.

Austrian composer Anton Bruckner was an innovative composer of the late 19th
century. He is primarily known for his symphonies and sacred music. Locus iste a

You Stole My Love
Walter C. Macfarren (1826-1905)

symphonies and other large-scale works, his most lasting works include piano
sonatas and partsongs for voice.
The Lark in the Morn
Randall Thompson (1899-1984)
This melody is based off of a traditional folk-song from Somersetshire, a county in
South West England. This arrangement is by Randall Thompson, a well-noted
American composer who wrote numerous choral works.
Come again, sweet love
John Dowland (1563-1626)
John Dowland can be considered the greatest English composer of lute music. This
piece is best known in its solo form but is cleverly voiced for four parts. The text is
a story of a longing lover utilizing Old English.

Arvo Pärt (b 1935)
This piece from Estonia is set to the text of the Hail Mary. Classified as a spiritual
minimalist, this piece shows Pärt’s unique style of tintinnabulation. The text
determines the time signature and therefore the nuances, evoking a chant-like
sound.
Rejoice, O virgin Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee:
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
for thou hast borne the Savior of our souls.
