•Palestine was a small country
•Had importance strategic
power
•Whoever controlled Palestine
controlled the trade routes
Roman Rule
• In 63BCE, The Roman invades Palestine
• The Romans put their own governors in
charge to rule the people
• In 40BCE Herod became King of Palestine
• He was capable and loyal to Rome
• Samaria and Judaea were both ruled by
Pontius Pilate( a Roman governor )
• Governors made sure Jewish people
obeyed the law
• In return Jews were allowed to follow
their own customs
• Jews were un happy with Roman Rule
• They believed that Palestine was
given to them by God
Tax Collector
• In Palestine the people lived ordinary lives
• Earned just enough money to keep them alive
• Following their occupation they had to pay extra
taxes to the Romans
• The money was collected be a local Jewish
person called a tax collector
• These people were seen as traitor or cheats
• Tax collectors were shunned
