Source: In forma, 2007, pgs. 47-48, IMPORTANCE OF ORAL HYGIENE … A correct oral hygiene of the periodontal system (teeth and gums) is what allows the periodontium in all its complexity as well as the bone or periodontal apparatus (alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, cementum of the tooth) to perform their function of supporting the tooth. A tooth is a natural nail-like structure that is anchored to the bone rather than being fixed in it. Periodontics, then, studies all that surrounds and functions as support system to the tooth. BACTERIA’S FAULT Periodontal diseases start when one or more elements of the periodontal apparatus, after having been colonized by numerous bacteria species, stop(s) performing their support function, which causes dental mobility. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? PYORRHEA AND GINGIVITIS: pay attention to daily hygiene Correct daily oral hygiene is essential to preserve our smile from serious dental and gum-related diseases. Inadequate or incorrect oral hygiene is at the root of some of the most recurrent dental and gum-related pathologies. Our enquiries about the consequences of an improper behavior are directed at Dental Dr. Domenico Monda from Naples and specialist in Dental Prosthesis, Posturology, Laser Light in the Craniofacial Region, as well as Professor at the University of Genoa for the Department of Laser Surgery in Craniofacial Region. The most recurrent symptoms of gingivitis which, if neglected can become periodontitis, include: acute gum sensitivity, bleeding and pain when chewing and, inflammation of the gingival margins. The presence of these symptoms strongly indicates the formation of periodontal pockets, which are areas where bacteria collects. In addition to being responsible for this illness, bacteria finds an ideal habitat wherever food residues and lack of oxygen allow it to survive and multiply. Bacteria that results from plaque, in fact, produces toxins that initially nick at the seal and, after penetrating deep down and depositing on the bottom of the gum’s pockets, start exercising their damaging action. HOME TREATMENT? IMPOSSIBLE When gums detach from the root of the tooth and the plaque’s bacteria is deeply nestled, oral hygiene at home cannot get rid of it. As a matter of fact, it has by now become technically impossible to thoroughly cleanse the gum’s pockets where plaque changes into tartar, roughening the root surfaces. When this occurs, it is the periodontologist’s task to have the patient undergo a cycle of treatments aimed at resolving this illness. USING LASER TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM The most modern method in gingivitis and pyorrhoea treatment consists in using the diode laser in combination with pharmaceutical and surgical protocols. The laser, through its laser ray, in fact, destroys all bacteria within its range. Once tartar and plaque have been removed, the slim laser probe is introduced deep down until it reaches the bottom of the gingival pockets already colonized by bacteria where, in addition to vaporizing all inflamed tissue and thanks to a bio-stimulating effect, the probe starts a process whereby the bone’s cells begin to multiply. From the moment inflammation is removed in these pockets, healthy cells start to reproduce allowing the tooth to become sturdy and steady again. The laser eliminates the periodontitis’ aggressive germs and thus lays the bases for healing the ailing gums. Scientific studies show that laser therapy significantly improves the healing possibilities when dealing with periodontal diseases. Thanks to the laser, furthermore, gingival tissue can also be reshaped so that cleaning with the toothbrush becomes easier. Totally pain-free, this procedure involves intervening on each affected tooth with a specific type of laser for two or perhaps three consecutive times a week.
