Protein Synthesis Project
Group Model due: May 12th/13th Individual Paper due: May 16th
DNA-> RNA->Protein
You and your partner(s) will build a working dynamic model of how the code within DNA is used to create a protein. You
will build and present models of:
1. DNA
2. RNA Polymerase enzyme
3. mRNA
4. A Ribosome
5. t- RNA molecules
6. A Polypeptide
Your use of materials in your model should be consistent – for example, you should use the same item to represent
phosphates in DNA and RNA.
Project checklist:
DNA Molecule:
 Four codons in length
 Double stranded
 Direction of each strand is marked
 Can open along the hydrogen bonds
 Has Phosphates
 Has appropriate sugars
 Has 4 different bases
RNA Polymerase
 RNA polymerase enzyme present
mRNA






Single stranded
Direction strand is marked
Compliments the correct template DNA strand
Has Phosphates
Has appropriate sugars
Has 4 different bases
Ribosome
 Has a large and small separate subunits
 Is the right size for mRNA to fit inside it
tRNA molecules
 Correct number of tRNA molecules
 Each has correct anticodon
 Each has correct amino acid attached but can be removed to form the polypeptide
Polypeptide
 Amino acids can link to form polypeptide
 A key that identifies the different components (i.e. bases, molecules, amino acids) of your model.
