GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (www.geomar.de) is a
foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%)
and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%) and is one of the internationally leading
institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an
annual budget of approx. 70 million Euro and has approx. 850 employees.
The research unit "Marine Geodynamics" is offering the position of a
Scientific Employee (PhD student)
from 01.05.2014 onwards. The position offers the possibility to attain a doctoral
degree in natural sciences.
Job description:
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate to join a team of
international scientists in the research unit "Marine Geodynamics" within the research
division "Dynamics of the Ocean Floor". The willingness for international travel and
participation in research cruises is required. The successful candidate will work on
the analysis and interpretation of marine geophysical data acquired along the
Kermadec island arc north of New Zealand.
Project description:
The Kermadec island arc marks the plate boundary between the Pacific and
Australian lithospheric plates and merges northwards into the Tonga arc. The
southern segment of this subduction zone is characterized by the entrance of the
Hikurangi plateau into the oceanic trench. The Kermadec margin system is controlled
by basic tectonic processes, making this an ideal target zone for research on
mechanisms of mass transfer at convergent plate boundaries. The seismic transects
acquired across the Kermadec margin along four profiles between 28°S-38°S will
improve our understanding of mass transfer processes and structure of the oceanic
lithosphere. Aim of the project is the analysis of the geophysical data using modeling
tools and tomographic inversion to evaluate the influence of the subducted oceanic
lithosphere on magmagenesis and seismogenesis along the Kermadec island arc.
GEOMAR with its seismic processing center offers an excellent geophysical
infrastructure for seismic data analysis and interpretation. The PhD student works in
the interdisciplinary and stimulating field of marine geophysics and volcanology.
The PhD student will have the possibility to join the “Integrated School for Ocean
Science (ISOS)” offering a wide range of courses for graduate training.
Qualification:
• University degree in Geophysics or related field is required
• Prior experience in seismic data analysis would be beneficial
• Good communication skills are expected
The position is available for 3 years with a salary according to TVöD-Bund 13 (75%)
of the German tariff for public employees. The position cannot be split.
GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the
proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics
to apply.
GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with
disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the
application process.
Please submit your application by 28 February, 2014 using the keyword
