Roman news th The News Romans Want to Know June 12 , 475 A.C. London, England How I Met the Roman Gods The Dirty Truth about Roman Gods and Myths By Jessica Hauser Last night I met some very interesting people at a dinner dance. I ran into some Roman gods and we had interesting conversations. I realized that all the Roman gods were adopted from Greek gods. The entire Roman culture is based around these gods and myths. The god who put together the party was Jupiter, king of all gods and men. It was hard to miss him. I knew I had to be polite to him because he has the power to punish people or gods if they did they did the wrong thing. Jupiter introduced me to his beautiful wife and queen, Juno. She seemed very proud of herself because she symbolized the image desired by a Roman woman. At my table was the god Mars, a son of Jupiter and Juno. He said he was originally the god of agriculture but he later becomes the god of war. He was pretty selfish because the soldiers of the Roman army prayed to him before, during , and after a battle. I thought Mars wasn’t so terrible until later that night when I met a very interesting goddess. The goddess’s name was Rhea Silvia. She is also known as llia. Rhea was forced to be a vestal virgin so that she could have no rightful heirs to become king. She was raped by Mars and gave birth to Remus and Romulus. Rhea hid her pregnancy so that she would not be killed. After the twins were born, she was discovered and her punishment was death, by Amulius, her uncle. Late in the evening, I bumped into Romulus. He told me the story of him and his twin, Remus. So after their mom’s uncle Amulius killed their mom Rhea, he put baby Romulus and Remus in the Tiber River. When they grew older, they killed Amulius for revenge and took the throne. The twins’ dad, Mars, had told them that they should build the city of Rome. Both twins wanted to be the only king. They fought very violently and very often too. One day, Romulus threw a rock at Remus and killed him. This made him the new king. Rome was named after Romulus because he was strong and mighty. That was one interesting dinner dance. Ding! Ding! Ding! Whoa, I guess I must have dozed off in class. At least I was dreaming and learning about something related to the topic. This carving was created in the Roman Empire.
