Mountains and Valleys P.R
The mountainous Interior
• A mountain is a natural elevation of the land that reaches great heights.
• Puerto Rico has a mountainous interior. This area is known as the central
mountainous interior.
• This regions include the islands mountains and hills.
• Hills are have smaller elevation that the mountains and are located around
the mountains. In P.R they are divided in 2 groups:
• Humid northern hills – receive a large amount of rain.
• Dry Southern hills – drier climate, less vegetation, and smaller
trees.
P.R 3 mountain ranges:
• Sierra de Cayey – Carite Forest is located there.

• The cordillera central – located right in the middle of P.R.
Least populated region in P.R
• Sierra Luquillo – The Caribbean Natural Forest (El Yunque), P.R most

Valleys
• Flat areas located between the mountains.
• In P.R there are 2 major valleys
• Eastern valley (Fajardo to Maunabo) – receive large quantities of rain, and are
use for agriculture.
• Western valley ( Aguadilla to Cabo Rojo) – land is fertile in some parts and dry
in others. Lajas Valley is located in this area.
