The evolution of social mating
systems
• Emlen and Oring model is based on sexual conflict
and resource distribution
• Sexual conflict – differential selection on males and
females to maximize their fitness
– Female fitness is most often limited by access to
resources
– Male fitness is most often limited by the number of
mates
• Resource amount and distribution vary in different
environments
