FEEDBACK ON
SCHIZOPHRENIA MINI
MOCK
Q2: EXPLAIN ONE CRITICISM OF USING
TOKEN ECONOMIES TO TREAT THE
SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA (2 MARKS)
• Make sure your elaboration relates to the point you
have made
Q4: USING YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF SCHIZOPHRENIA,
EXPLAIN WHY LOUISE IS NOW SHOWING SYMPTOMS OF
SCHIZOPHRENIA (4 MARKS)
•
You need to mention the diathesis stress model in your answer and explain what it suggests
•
Don’t repeat information in the text unless you are specifically relating it to the question
•
A lot of students didn’t express the genetic vulnerability element of the stress-diathesis model
very clearly. You need to say that the model suggests that the individual inherits a gene, or a
combination of genes that predisposes them to develop the disorder, but that whether or not
they do develop the disorder will depend on their experiences in the environment
•
Quite a few students got diathesis and stress mixed up. Diathesis is the genetic vulnerability (in
this case) and stress is the environmental trigger
•
To get full marks you must mention both the genetic vulnerability and the environmental trigger
and relate both to examples in the scenario
•
There is no suggestion that Louise has grown up in a high EE environment
•
Nobody ‘catches’ schizophrenia. It is not contagious
Q4: USING YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF
SCHIZOPHRENIA, EXPLAIN WHY LOUISE IS
NOW SHOWING SYMPTOMS OF
SCHIZOPHRENIA (4 MARKS)
Q5: BRIEFLY OUTLINE CBT FOR SCHIZ AND
EXPLAIN ONE LIMITATION (4 MARKS)
• It is not an appropriate evaluation of CBT for
schizophrenia to say that it is expensive as this is
generic and does not relate to schizophrenia
specifically
• Only give one limitation
• Don’t include strengths
Q5: BRIEFLY OUTLINE CBT FOR SCHIZ AND
EXPLAIN ONE LIMITATION (4 MARKS)
Q6: OUTLINE ONE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
TYPICAL AND ATYPICAL DRUGS..
• Possible content:
• typical- primarily combat positive symptoms,
atypical- both positive and negative
• typical- greater side effects, atypical- lower risk of
side effects especially motor movement. Could also
say difference in side effects experienced.
• typical-block only dopamine receptors, atypicaleffects both dopamine and serotonin
Q7: EXPLAIN HOW A SINGLE BLIND
PROCEDURE CAN BE USED TO REDUCE THE
RISK OF DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS
• Your answer must relate specifically to the scenario and
not just say ‘they won’t know the aims of the study and
therefore won’t change their behaviour’. You must
mention the role of the placebo condition
• It is not necessarily the case that the participants would
not know the aims of the study in this particular example.
They may well know the aims of the study, they just won’t
know which group they are in
• In a single blind study only participant is kept unaware of
who is in which group, not the researcher
Q7: EXPLAIN HOW A SINGLE BLIND
PROCEDURE CAN BE USED TO REDUCE THE
RISK OF DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS
• Possible content:
• In a single blind procedure the participant does not
know whether they are receiving the real
antipsychotic medication or a placebo. This is so
measurement of their behaviour in response to the
medication will be more valid- they cannot
consciously or unconsciously work out what the
researcher expects to find and change their
behaviour.
Q8: OUTLINE AND EVALUATE THE COGNITIVE
EXPLANATION OF SCHIZOPHRENIA
• When evaluating the cognitive explanation do not focus too
heavily on therapy. It’s fine to say that it has led to therapies
being developed, but you don’t need to describe how those
therapies work
• It is not necessary to give the procedures of a study when
using it to evaluate an explanation of something
• If you include the stroop test study, you must ground the
research to the theory or you won’t receive any credit for it
• Be careful when describing meta-representation it is where
the individual is unable to distinguish between their own and
others’ actions, rather than ‘believing their actions are carried
out by others’
