New field trips now being developed for the 2016 WJEC Geography GCSE spec. With the new NEA in Unit 3 rather than controlled assessment Nature Days are developing days to cover the specification. The days which are being developed are outlined below but more will be developed as schools enquire and also as the conceptual framework is published by WJEC. All days aim to engage learners in the whole process and enable them to become independent learners so necessary in the progression towards an independent investigation at A level. Fieldwork days can combine a human and physical context in one location where possible. Geographical skills day. Providing opportunities for student to learn how to use field techniques and undertake data collection. A day which can incorporate both coastal landforms; sand dunes, and urban fieldwork in one location. This covers methodologies, the enquiry process and mathematical and statistical skills. Fieldwork Methodologies: Geographical flows: Infiltration rates in various soils. Interception rates in various vegetation types Discharge rates compared to rainfall Longitudinal survey of downstream changes in a river Beach deposition LSD surveys. Cycles and Flows: Flow of data using mobile phones and commuter movements Microclimate surveys looking at movement of litter, wind, heat, location of solar panels. Comparing river flows in contrasting river stages. Identifying seasonal change in a local ecosystem. Also days to cover the Key ideas spec content. Key idea 1; Landscapes and Physical Processes. River landforms - change over time. Causes of flooding and prevention. River features measurements - sinuosity, sediment sorting. Coastal landforms- change over time. Climate impact on discharge and landform change. Key idea 4.1: Coastal Hazards and their management. Key idea 5.2: Weather patterns and process. Microclimate in Urban area or across a sanddune transect. Key Idea 5.3: Processes and interactions within ecosystems. Small scale ecosystem Sand dunes, hedgerow, salt marsh, Key idea 5.4: Human activity and ecosystems processes. The impact of management and human activity on ecosystems.
