Frog legs
•Hindlegs are strong and
muscular because they are
used for jumping
•Forelegs provide balance
and cushion the frog when it
lands after jumping

Frog Eye
• The frog has large bulging eyes
• The frog has 3 eyelids
– 2 outer ones are the color of the frog’s body
and do not move
– 3rd eyelid is a transparent membrane that
protects the eye while permitting the frog to
see under water
• It also keeps the eye moist when the frog is on land

Eardrum and External Nares
• Behind the eye is the circular eardrum
• 2 openings in the nasal cavity-external
nares are found toward the tip of the snout
– These will close when the frog is under water

Frog Skin
• Smooth, moist, and thin
• Frog can breathe directly through skin as
well as with lungs

Coloration
• Notice the difference in coloring between
the belly and the rest of the frog’s body

Dissection index
Frog Tongue
• Attached to the front of the mouth
• Sticky- used to catch insects

Frog Teeth
• Ridges along the inside of upper jaw are
maxillary teeth
• 2 vomerine teeth are located toward the
front of the upper jaw

Dissection index
Gullet & Eustachian tubes
• The gullet (throat) is the wide opening that
leads to the esophagus
• On both sides of the gulled near the jaw
hinges are openings to the Eustachian tube.
– These lead to the eardrum

44. Gall bladder
42
43
39
•
Greenish sac
attached to the
liver
•
It stores bile,
which breaks
down fats during
digestion

Stomach
•Below the liver
•Large and white
•On the right side
as you look at the
frog
•Connects to the
small intestine
Jenna Hellack Fall 2000
Dissection index
Small Intestines
• The straight part of the small intestine is
called the duodenum
• The coiled section is the ileum
Jenna Hellack Fall 2000
Dissection index
Mesentery & Ileum
• The coils of the ileum are connected by
thin, transparent membranes called
mesenteries.
Jenna Hellack Fall 2000
Dissection index
Large Intestine
• The small intestine widens to form the large intestine.
• The lower portion of the large intestine is called the cloaca.
Jenna Hellack Fall 2000
Dissection index
Pancreas
• In the mesentery along the inner curve of the stomach is
the pancreas which secretes digestive enzymes and
insulin into the duodenum.

•
In the mesentery of the
coiled part of the small
intestine
•
Reddish, spherical
structure
•
The spleen is an organ
in the frog’s circulatory
system that makes,
stores, and destroys
blood cells

Lungs
• 2 Lungs
– Reddish-brown saclike structures

Frog Heart
• 3 chambers
– 2 upper chambers- right and left atria
– Lower chamber- ventricle
Jenna Hellack Fall 2000
Dissection index
Kidney
2 dark-red kidneys attached to the back wall of the abdominal
cavity. Kidneys filter out impurities from the blood.

Urinary Bladder
52. Urinary bladder
Jenna Hellack Fall 2000
•
Urinary bladder
empties into the
cloaca
•

leading from each
kidney to the
bladder
