“Cups for Kaylee” Kaylee (niece of Madame Flo Snow) is an 8 year old who was diagnosed in March with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), which is an inoperable brain cancer with a median survival rate from diagnosis of 9 months. Some DIPG symptoms are muscle weakness on one side of the body, swallowing problems, speech problems, crossed eyes, drowsiness, hearing loss, and personality changes. DIPGs are difficult to treat because the tumor cells grow in between and around normal cells. It is impossible to remove a tumor in this area because it interferes with the functioning of this critical area of the brain. Although radiation is sometimes effective in stopping the growth of these tumors, they almost always return at an aggressive rate. Currently, there are several experimental treatments that are being trialed to cure this cancer. Kaylee has been accepted to a trial in London and will be traveling there with her Mom for treatment. At Audubon, we want to help. We will post a “Cups for Kaylee” fence collage at both campuses on Friday, February 3, 2017. We are asking each student to donate $1 for a cup that will be used to create Fence Collages in honor of Kaylee and to raise awareness of DIPG. We will also have envelopes in each homeroom for any family that would like to make a donation to the “Cups for Kaylee” fund. All proceeds collected will go directly to Kaylee and her family to cover the expense of her treatment.
