What is Schizophrenia?

 Schizophrenia is one of the most known mental
illnesses and can be categorized as a psychotic
disorder.
 This illness is known for the delusions and
hallucinations that comes along with it.
 There are 5 types of Schizophrenia based on your
symptoms. Ill be discussing 3 types:
 Disorganized
 Paranoid
 Catatonic
Disorganized Schizophrenia

 This type of schizophrenia is considered one of the
more severe types of this illness.
 People suffering with type are more likely not able to
go through daily activities and may not be able to
function with normal society.
 In this type people hallucinations, aren't able to be
understood, and have abnormal behavior.
Symptoms of Disorganized
schizophrenia

 Some of the symptoms are:






Inappropriate emotional responses
Has a hard time feeling pleasure
Delusions
Hallucinations
Strange behavior
Speech that tends to make no sense
What is significant about this
type?

 Each type has something significant about it, this
type is more focused on hallucinations that people
see.
 Its is one of the most severe types
 Many of the people cant function in daily life.
Paranoid Schizophrenia

 Paranoid schizophrenia mainly has to do with
hearing, and people hear things that are not there.
 They feel like other people are conspiring against
them and they are against the world.
Symptoms

 Some symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia would
be:






Auditory hallucinations
Delusions
Emotional distance
Violent
Anxiety
Suicidal behavior
Significance

 People with this illness hear voices and can live semi
normal lives but they are constantly thinking that
everyone is against them, or they are being followed
and watched.
Catatonic Schizophrenia

 In this type people suffering are known to “lose
touch” with reality. Sometimes they feel like they are
in somewhat of a daze.
 People sometimes feel as if they are in a coma they
cant really do anything.
 These episodes can last a long time if left un treated.
Symptoms

 Some of the symptoms include:




Being unable to move
Sometimes moving way to much in odd ways
Mimicking someone's speech and/or movements
Non responsive to command
What is Significant?

 What is significant about this type is that most of the
people behave in an unordinary way and sometimes
aren't even able to speak. Also these “episodes” can
last for months or even longer.
 This type is actually very rare.
Risk Factors of
Schizophrenia

 Research has identified 5 different risk factors of
schizophrenia.





Schizophrenia within the family
Unusual thoughts
Substance abuse
Paranoia or suspicion
Social impairment

 Other researchers believe that there are only 3 main
factors
 The 3 factors are
 Genetics
 Environment
 Brain Chemistry
Medication Treatments

 Antipsychotic medications are normally used when
trying to treat schizophrenia.
 The medication doesn’t cure the disease it tries to
maintain the symptoms and try to control them.
 They have 2 different phases:
 Acute phase is using a higher amount of the drug in
the beginning to treat the psychotic symptoms
 Maintenance phase that comes later on for the rest of
your life.
Therapy Treatments

 Individual psychotherapy, this is where the patient
has sessions with their doctors and they talk about
their problems, feeling and everything that is going
on with them.
 Rehabilitation is where they try to get a job and learn
how to function in a normal society.
