Brodie Stewart is an accomplished and dedicated young musician who has a passion for all facets of
the music industry.
The 18-year-old is in his first year of studies for a Bachelor of Music Jazz Performance at the Western
Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
His love of music was nurtured from a young age, commencing with classical piano study. He is selftaught on guitar, bass, drums and saxophone.
Brodie has picked up many awards along the way for his song writing and piano ability, especially in
jazz which, alongside musical directing, is his ambition. He has won vocal sections at the City of
Bunbury/WA Performing Arts Eisteddfod although he considers himself to be a musician who happens
to be able to sing.
Brodie accompanies many vocalists and vocal groups and is a founding member of versatile Bunbury
band The Stratz. He joined the Sultans of Jazz and Kane Toad Krisis at the age of 12. You may also see
him performing in local bands Stratisfy, Soul Doubt, Home Brew and Skeleton Jump.
Brodie’s talents on piano have seen him in demand as an accompanist for a number of years, and he
often performs with vocal trio ISHUNI and in a piano bar duo with vocalist Courtney Downes.
His commitment to community events including fundraiser Relay for Life, the annual Mayor’s Garden
Party and Bunbury’s annual Carols by Candlelight was recognised with him being awarded the city’s
2012 Young Citizen of the Year honour.
Brodie has accompanied several vocal groups and vocalists at the Art Gallery in Bunbury, at South West
Music Guild concerts and St Augustine’s Church’s annual concert. A highlight was playing for The 3
Chinese Tenors when they toured WA’s south in 2009.
Aged 15, Brodie was engaged as musical director for the Bunbury Musical Comedy Group’s 2009
production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. He enjoyed working with the directors and musicians as well as
taking the vocal warm-ups and singing coaching. Brodie gave his time in return for a wealth of
knowledge in the performing arts and found it a great opportunity to work in a large group on a
community arts project.
Brodie’s long involvement at the annual Eisteddfod in Bunbury saw him accompany visiting choirs on
two occasions and he worked closely over four days in 2010 and 2011 with their conductors, Dr
Jonathon Welsh and Dr John Cooper (Canada), respectively. He was extremely honoured to be invited
by Dr Welch, the founder of ‘The Choir of Hard Knocks’ to travel to Melbourne to further his studies in
music.
He is often asked to support well-known artists at events in the South West and Perth, and has proudly
supported Panda Band at the Perth Royal Show, Harlequin League, Normie Rowe, John Paul Young,
Daniel Gassin and Phil Ceberano.
As a song writer, Brodie has worked with a variety of genres. He was a finalist in the WAM Awards in
2007 for his song ‘Out of Phase’ and in 2011 for ‘Clockwork’. Earlier this year he released his first CD, a
compilation of self-penned contemporary songs titled ‘In a Room’, which Brodie produced in his home
recording studio. He also provided back-up vocals and musical accompaniment on the album, with his
talented brother Reilly providing percussion.
Recording many demos for soloists and groups (including Home Brew, Codee-Lee Down, Jack Resta,
Naomi Dixon and ISHUNI) is also a passion which has led Brodie down the path of sound engineering.
He sees his future as a musical director/arranger on a large scale, following the likes of John Foreman
and Chong Lim. In addition, Brodie aims to take on sideline roles as a session performer, accompanist,
film composer, arranger and conductor.
Brodie is a highly dedicated musician with a keen and bright musical future ahead of him.
