Primary Care Access Walk in Service at Surbiton Health Centre FAQ
Q. What is a primary care access walk in service?
A primary care access walk in services means that you can walk in without an appointment
to see a GP or nurse.
Q. When will it be open?
Initially the service will be open from 8.00am to 2.00pm for walk in patients and 10.00am to
2.00pm for same day booked appointments, phone lines will be open from 8.00am. The last
walk in patient will be accepted 30 minutes before closing.
We expect opening times to increase to 8.00am to 8.00pm in November 2016.
Q. Why is it only open at the weekend?
Our ambition is to have 8.00am to 8.00pm, seven days a week primary care services in
Kingston. We already have in place contracts with Kingston GP practices to provide primary
medical services Monday to Friday, with some providing extended hours and also Saturday
morning appointments for registered patients. To deliver improved outcomes, avoid
duplication while ensuring best value, the new service supplements existing primary care
provision and increases access to primary care at the weekend.
Q. How do I make an appointment?
You do not have to make an appointment, you can just walk in and wait to be seen and
treated. However, if you prefer a same day booked appointment you can call 020 3841 9942
from 8.00am
Q. Who can be seen?
Any patient, regardless of where or whether they are registered with a GP practice, who has
an urgent condition that they would normally go to a GP to be seen and treated.
The Primary Care Walk-in Service will be able to see and treat minor illnesses and injuries
including:
 Minor illness such as headaches, dizziness, high temperatures and severe 'flu-like'
symptoms and hayfever.
 Minor cuts, bruises, burns and scalds
 Strains and sprains
 Minor infections including ear, nose and throat
 Abdominal pain
 Dermatology and skin complaints
 Urgent prescription medicines
It excludes:
 Conditions that warrant immediate direction to A&E such as chest pain and severe
shortness of breath
 Any pregnancy related issue




Exacerbations of long term conditions
Dental emergencies
Mental health emergencies
Follow up appointments
For emergency and life threatening symptoms patients should continue to call 999 or go to
A&E.
Q. Do you have to be registered with a GP practice?
No, all patients registered with a GP practice or not, with a condition that can be seen and
treated by a GP or primary care nurse will be able to walk in or make a same day
appointment.
Q. Do you have to be registered with a Kingston GP practice?
No, the service is open to all patients regardless of whether they are registered with a
Kingston GP or not and who have a medical need that can be seen and treated by a GP or
primary care nurse.
Q. Is there car parking at Surbiton Health Centre?
There are parking spaces, accessed via Ewell Road for patients and visitors arriving by car.
The car park uses a number-plate checking system to prevent misuse of the car park, and
this requires patients to validate their parking by providing their registration number when
checking in for an appointment.
Q. Why is it a six month pilot?
The opening of the Primary Care Walk-in Service is part of Kingston CCG’s wider strategy to
deliver 08.00am to 08.00pm, seven days a week primary care services across Kingston.
Kingston Clinical Commissioning Group’s Governing Body agreed to pilot the service for six
months, with a view to reviewing and improving the service to ensure that it effectively meets
the needs of patients now and into the future.
