Four tutorials will be presented. All are scheduled on Sunday, 23 October 2016.
SDN 101
Presenter: TBD
9:00AM – 12:00noon, Trinity A
This session will cover the basics of Software-Defined Networks. As Powering the SDN is
the theme of this year’s Intelec, it will be useful for the attendee to know what SDN is and
how it works, so that they can help solve the issues that arise around powering it.

380 VDC Plants and Distribution
BJ Sonnenberg, Dave Geary, and Keichi Hirose
9:00AM – 12:00noon, Trinity B
This session will discuss higher voltage distribution with emphasis on applications in data
centers, telecom facilities and microgrids. System architectures, components and design
practices will be reviewed with focus on safety and ease of deployment. Examples of
present deployments will be presented as well as status of global standardization and
ecosystem development.
About The Speakers
BJ Sonnenberg
BJ Sonnenberg – Manager Business Development – Emerson Network Power
BJ has over 30 years of experience with UPS and DC power systems. His broad involvement in
engineering, manufacturing, marketing and sales allows him to bring a well – rounded
perspective to solutions related to power distribution for critical applications.
He has held a variety of engineering , product planning and development , general
management , marketing and sales positions at Exide Electronics (today Eaton), Merlin Gerin
(today Schneider), Magnetek , Ericsson and Emerson Network Power Energy Systems.
BJ is a patent holder and frequent speaker at international events related to modern approach for
critical power conversion and distribution. He is an author and co-author of numerous white
papers and technical papers addressing data center and telecom power applications. He is a
contributor to development of global standards addressing DC power applications.
BJ holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Warsaw Polytechnics, Warsaw, Poland.
David Geary
David Geary is the Vice President of Power Delivery at Power Analytics. Dave joined the company in
2015 when his company, dcFUSION, merged with Power Analytics. Dave is a licensed professional
electrical engineer with a distinguished career spanning more than 30 years. Throughout his career Dave
has brought innovation and leadership to a variety of electrical engineering projects in many markets
including: government and private infrastructure engineering, design, construction, and operations. Dave
is considered one of the pioneers and experts in the new evolution of higher voltage direct current (dc)
power distribution for telecom, data centers, and dc microgrids—specifically, for the evolution of
alternative energy integration with energy storage in dc microgrids. In his role as co-founder, principal
engineer, at dcFUSION, Dave provided technical engineering innovation, vision and leadership for the
use and development of alternative energy solutions, as well as higher voltage (380/400V dc) electrical
system topologies for data centers and technology facilities.
Keichi Hirose
Speaker biography TBD.
Powering the 5G Network
Brian Zanstecher
1:30 – 4:30 pm, Trinity A
This tutorial will provide an in‐depth look at 5G and its enabling constituents to give the
attendee a broad understanding of how power architecting and IPM all fit together to
provide this paradigm shift in technology. In addition to the technical aspects, the market
impacts will also be reviewed and analyzed for all stages to help one understand the impact
on daily life for all users up to paradigm shifts in the markets of the telecommunications
industry. It is intended for Design Engineers, Program Managers, Data Center Architects,
Data Center Managers, & Marketing/Sales Personnel associated with the power supply
and/or telecommunications industries.
About The Speaker
Brian Zahnstecher is the Principal of PowerRox, where he focuses on power design,
integration, system applications, and OEM market penetration, and private seminars for
power electronics. He has successfully handled assignments in system design/architecting,
AC/DC front‐end power, embedded solutions, processor power, and digital power solutions
for a variety of clients. He previously held positions in power electronics with industry
leaders Emerson Network Power, Cisco, and Hewlett‐Packard, where he advised on best
practices, oversaw product development, managed international teams, created/enhanced
optimal workflows and test procedures, and designed and optimized voltage regulators. He
has been a regular contributor to the industry as an invited speaker, author, workshop
participant, session host, roundtable moderator, and volunteer. He has over 12 years of
industry experience and holds Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Science degrees from
Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Hybrid Site Powering (Multiple AC/DC Inputs)
Dave Wilson
1:30 – 4:30 pm, Trinity B
The deployment of Hybrid Telecom Solutions – the management of multiple energy sources
– presents a new challenge, how do manage the site without undue complexity and what
considerations do you need to plan for? This session will discuss some of the nuisances that
may be forgotten when managing multiple energy sourcing – generators, solar panels, wind
and batteries. The survey and discussion will go into greater depth what is N+1 for Solar,
how important is the placement of the array and what to look for in a solar array? The
discussion with continue with a discussion on what it takes to achieve the promise of wind
and look at the diversity of battery solutions available. This discussion will reflect
experiences gather from years of deployment, whether it is sites over-looking Los Angeles,
from the rain-forest in Papua New Guinea or rural regions in Ethiopia. In all decisions, it
will be about how to do it well, but with a view to simplicity.
About The Speaker
David Wilson is an Engineering Director at Emerson, and responsible for Global Hybrid
Evolution. His experience in hybrid telecom systems began with the deployment of
Generation 1 (PWM solar) and simple Diesel Generator Solutions to driving the current
third generation of solutions dealing with flexibility and ease of application. An open
discussion would be encouraged and will reflect David’s experience in having and support
solutions around the global. David is a graduate from the University of Toronto, Electrical
Engineering, from 1984, and has since worked at Digital Equipment, Ciena and for the past
10 years at Emerson.
