Columbia
rivers.
Place



Located in the Rocky Mountains between the Selkirk and Purcell Ranges
Heavily forested, poor soils and little agriculture.
The area is the playground for Albertans with world-class ski resort, hiking, whitewater rafting,
hang and paragliding, and many more activities.
Regions
Provincial Electoral area is called Columbia River-Revelstoke. Golden’s MLA is Norm
Macdonald (NDP)
Federal Electoral area is called Kootenay—Columbia. Golden’s MP is David Wilks (Conservative).



Located in Rocky Mountain Trench, it is located in the north end of the Columbia Valley.
Golden is considered to be on “Canada’s main street” the Trans-Canada Highway. Over a million
vehicles pass through Golden each year. Located about half-way between Calgary and the
Okanagan, Golden is a logical place for travelers to stop, eat and refuel as they travel to the
Okanagan and Vancouver and back.
The makeup of the town is changing from a remote, logging town to a vibrant ski resort town,
located in the heart of 5 national parks.
Movement




Logging, CP rail and tourism industries account for many people moving in and out of Golden.
Many people are building vacation cottages in Golden and area and are considered part-time
residents
The school enrolments are declining, indicating a trend for families to move to other areas for
cheaper housing and more job opportunities.
Golden has recently upgraded its IT infrastructure to fibre optics.
Interaction



Kinbasket Lake was created when the Columbia River was dammed. However, the lake has not
been considered a popular recreation area due to lack of road access and fluctuating water
levels.
There are land-use plans that allow for back-country sharing for skiers, sledders, and highcountry resorts.
The wetlands are also protected from development and hunting.
