Ch 4 Elements, Mixtures, and Compounds
Study Guide
*A compound is a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined
together by chemical bonds which can be broken down.
Compounds are found in all living things including proteins
When two or more elements join together chemically a compound is formed
A pure substance forms when two elements chemically combine- this pure substance is
called a compound
A solid solution of metal dissolved in a metal is called an alloy
Salt can dissolve in water because salt is soluble (able to dissolve)
When elements form mixtures, the elements keep their original properties
Sugar can dissolve more quickly in water by crushing the sugar cube
If you added a spoonful of salt to a glass of water, what would you call the water?
solvent…… what would you call the salt?.... solute. What is the whole mixture called?
Solution.
Bacteria make compounds from nitrogen in the air
Gelatin is a colloid
Nugget of gold is an element
Water is a compound
Salt dissolved in water is a mixture called a solution
An element that shares metal and nonmetal properties is called a metalloid
A solid solution of metals or nonmetals dissolved in metals is called an alloy
The substance in which a solute dissolves is called a solvent
-A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or
chemical means is an element
-An element that is shiny and conducts heat and electric current is a metal
